Boot Juice is an Americana band from Davis, California. The band features sounds blending heavy rock, acoustic bluegrass, big band, and gospel.[1][2] The band was founded by Connor Herdt in 2015 [3], and is known for their high-energy live shows[4] while appearing at festivals and other events across the Western United States.[5][6][2]
They have released two studio albums since 2019.[7]
History
Formation
The band has roots in the Idaho whitewater rafting scene, where Connor Herdt took summer work as a raft guide.[3] Connor and Evan Daly (childhood friends from Davis, CA)[8] began touring around Idaho in 2017. The duo got their early start by playing for river guides at informal jams and bars along the Salmon River and Payette River.
Addition of Core Members
In 2017, the band added Jessica Stoll as a vocalist and art director. Stoll and Herdt had met while attending Feather River College[9] in Quincy, CA, and the pair worked together in Banks, Idaho.[10]
Also in 2017, bassist Brett Worley began touring with the band. Worley has a degree in studio recording[11] from University of San Francisco contributed greatly to the process of recording the first album (Speaking in Tones). He is also Evan Daly's cousin. [12]
The Horn Section
In 2019, Evan Daly tapped Caleb Sanders and Micah Marmorstein to fill in on saxophone and trumpet.[13]
Sanders and Marmorstein met while attending UC Davis, taking part in the college jazz ensemble and studying STEM. [14] They had first played in a college band (Lo & the Mix) with Evan Daly, the former drummer.[15] Marmorstein and Sanders were collaborators for an Oakland-based funk band, Litty DeBungus, and have recorded horns for a titular album of the same name.[16]
In 2022, Matt Vollmer joined the band on trumpet and low brass to write and record brass arrangements on the third studio album. Vollmer has been a member in the Sacramento brass-band scene since 2016[17] and is a regular member of the band's modern touring lineup.
Ties to Idaho and Whitewater Sports
The band's namesake is a reference to a tradition within the Idaho whitewater community of drinking beer out of one's shoe if they fall out of their kayak.[3] The band first rose to prominence in the rafting scene of the Payette River in Idaho. [10]
Their first music video (Mountain Bound) pays tribute to their whitewater roots by featuring frontman Connor Herdt paddling along the Payette River using a guitar as a paddle.[18]

The Band's Sound and Influences
Several elements of Americana instrumentation are featured throughout the Boot Juice catalog: electric guitar, acoustic bluegrass guitar, harmonizing vocalists, drumset, piano, and a horn section.
| “ | Everyone really brings different things to the table musically ... from bluegrass to metal, to jazz and punk are weaved into the acoustic tapestry of the band. | ” |

Shifting Gears (2021)
The album was funded by the success of a crowdfunding campaign to record, mix, and master songs written by the band, culminating in a live show at the International House of Oddfellows in Davis, CA.[19] It was recorded during lockdown of the COVID-19 pandemic. Self-published, the album was produced by Scott Gordon[20]. Album artwork was done by Jessica Stoll.
