Boyfriend of the Dead is a supernatural romance webcomic hosted on Webtoon by artist Ushio. It follows a group of humans and zombies as they attempt to survive the apocalypse.

Boyfriend of the Dead was originally published on Webtoon CANVAS before being picked up as an Original title.[1] The first episode was published as a Webtoon Original series on July 14, 2017. It was the ninth most viewed comic on Webtoon in 2019.[2] As of July 2021, the series has over two million subscribers and is on hiatus.[3]
Plot[edit]
Alex is on vacation with her boyfriend when the zombie apocalypse breaks out. When she stops to grab some clothes in the middle of the chaos, she meets N, a zombie with no memory of his life before. He also is conflicted over the idea of eating people. The two of them team up and soon run into zombies and humans alike who are looking to survive, and once their group expands, they learn about what caused the apocalypse in the first place. Most surprising, as Alex and N spend more time together, they begin to develop feelings for each other.[4]
Themes of Boyfriend of the Dead include survival, found family, and identity.
Characters[edit]
- Alex is a tourist who gets caught up in the middle of the zombie apocalypse. Though she loves fashion and makeup, she is incredibly adept at killing zombies.[5]
- N is a zombie who feels ill at the idea of eating people he once knew. He has no memory of who he was before being a zombie. When he meets Alex, he begins to feel again and wants to stay with her.[6]
- Lily is a kind, soft-spoken zombie who becomes good friends with Alex.
- Max is a gruff human who being who changes his view on zombies after N helps him escape out of a quarantine facility. He is Claire's father.
- Claire is a human tomboy and Max's daughter.
- Doc is a human scientist who is interested in the disease creating zombies. He is compassionate toward the zombies and leaves the human stronghold to join Alex and N.
- The Botanist is a vegetarian zombie who is disgusted by the smell of humans. Through his work, he discovers more about the disease creating zombies.
- Elsa is a mysterious human scientist.
- Ein and Zwei are child zombie twins that N meets when they're hiding at a toy store. They have resisted eating any human flesh and haven't fully turned.
