Boys Planet (also known as Boys Planet: Star Is Born for zeroth episode) is an ongoing South Korean reality competition show created by Mnet. It premiered on Mnet on February 2, 2023, and airs every Thursday at 20:00 (KST) for the first two episodes and changed to 20:50 (KST) from third episode onwards.[2]

The aim of the competition is to debut a new boy group comprising of trainees and idols from around the world. Auditions for the competition were held from December 2021 to February 2022 and June to August 2022.[3]

Out of 13,000 applicants, 98 contestants were selected forming two equal groups known as the "K-Group" (comprising Koreans) and the "G-Group" (comprising non-Koreans).[4]

Concept[edit]

The "planet" theme of the show was derived from a collaboration between Mnet and NCSoft's new platform called Universe which is centered around K-pop. Unlike Girls Planet 999 that used the Universe platform, viewers will instead have to vote through Mnet's platform Mnet Plus. The show will allow votes from other countries outside of South Korea.

The debut group is decided by 100% Star Creator votes.[lower-alpha 2][5] The voting system is audited by Samil PwC.[lower-alpha 3]

Promotion and broadcast[edit]

On December 11, 2021, during the 2021 Mnet Asian Music Awards, Mnet revealed that Boys Planet, the male version of Girls Planet 999, was coming in 2022. Later, Mnet clarified that they are taking applications from potential contestants between December 11, 2021, and February 11, 2022.

On June 25, 2022, Mnet officially confirmed they plan to air Boys Planet in the first half of 2023. Although they already began accepting applications from potential contestants, the production team decided to extend the application period. They announced they will be opening global auditions from June 27 to August 21 for any male born before January 1, 2010, regardless of nationality, affiliation with an agency, or experience as a singer.[6][7]

On August 30, Mnet announced that trainees from 229 agencies along with self-trained applicants from 84 countries across Asia, Europe, the Americas and the Middle East, submitted applications for the first round of recruitment. The final contestants would be chosen by mid-November.[8]

On November 28, Mnet announced that it would unveil the first teaser video for Boys Planet at the 2022 MAMA Awards.[9]

The show's premiere date of February 2, 2023, was confirmed through a teaser photo released on December 21, 2022.[10] The theme song, "Here I Am" (Hangul난 빛나) was released on December 29, 2022 accompanied by a performance of the song on M Countdown by all of the contestants later that day, revealing Sung Han-bin of K-Group and Zhang Hao of G-Group as the centers.[11] The contestants' profiles were released the same day.[12]

Episodes[edit]

No.TitleOriginal air date
1"안녕 나야[lower-alpha 6] (Star Level Test)"February 2, 2023 (2023-02-02)
The episode begins with Star Master Hwang Min-hyun explaining the show's concept, followed by the show's 98 contestants being introduced to the Star Level Test. The Star Level Test involves the contestants rating their own skills out of four stars by placing stickers on their name tags, before being re-assessed by the show's mentors (known as Vocal, Dance and Rap Masters) through performances. As a bonus, the group with the most stars following the Star Level Test would be able to preview the show's theme song "Here I Am" a day earlier than the other group.
2"여기 있잖아[lower-alpha 7] (Signal Song Test)"February 9, 2023 (2023-02-09)
The episode begins with the contestants reacting to the show's first episode alongside Sunmi. The episode then proceeds with the continuation of the Star Level Test. In the end, the K-Group won with 119 stars over G-Group's 98 stars. After moving into a dormitory (dubbed as Planet Camp), the contestants are introduced to the show's theme song "Here I Am (난 빛나)" and the accompanying Signal Song Test. The Signal Song Test re-evaluates the contestants' star levels based on their performance of the theme song. The contestants practice the theme song with the help of the show's mentors.
3"불을 켜줘[lower-alpha 8] (Group Battle Mission)"February 16, 2023 (2023-02-16)
The Signal Song Test continued and after re-evaluation by the show's mentors, the stage was revealed. The trainees voted for who they believe would be the best for the killing part of each group wherein Sung Han Bin was picked as the representative of K Group while Zhang Hao was chosen for G Group. The next day, the trainees were gathered in a big room where they were ranked based on how popular their fancams are for the signal song. Trainees Lee Hoe-taek and Dang Hong Hai ranked first for K and G Group, respectively. Afterwards, Star Master Hwang Min-hyun announced their first mission: K vs G Group Battle. 14 teams were formed to compete for 7 songs: Seventeen's "Very Nice", EXO's "Love Me Right", BTS's "Danger", NCT Dream's "Hot Sauce", Wanna One's "Burn It Up", Stray Kids' "Back Door", and Blackpink's "Kill This Love". The first-placers were given the opportunity to pick their teammates first. Each group consisted of 7 members, with the exception of Kill This Love team wherein there will be 5 K Group trainees and 6 G Group trainees. The episode later showed the groups rehearsing and assigning roles of the 'leader', 'killing part', 'main vocalist', 'sub vocalists', and 'rappers'. Each song is then performed live by the two groups and each member is voted on separately by the live audience. The winning team among the two is determined by combining the individual scores. Members of the winning group would gain an extra 100,000 points, to be included into the ranking announcement of the week after. The group with the highest overall points would later perform on M! Countdown. Only five teams covering "Very Nice", "Kill This Love", and "Love Me Right" were shown this week.
