The Braintree Athletic Complex is a planned 150,000 square foot privately owned[3] multi-purpose sports complex located on the campus of Braintree High School[4] in Braintree, Massachusetts. The complex is scheduled to break ground at the end of this summer. It is planned to be ready for the Fall of 2016.[5] The complex will be developed by CMX Partners and will be eco-friendly.[6]

The new facility will be built over the acreage of a former soccer field at Braintree High School, Carson Field[7] and will be adjacent to the current artificial turf football field[1] at Braintree High School. Rentals will be prioritized to Braintree sports teams and residents and at a discounted price.[8]

The Town of Braintree had issues trying to plan the project. Braintree had to win a court approval to locate the pool away from Watson Park, where Petersen's will stated it would be. Then, they needed the Legislature to give them the okay to lease the land to a private company.[9] At Watson Park, Braintree built the Petersen splash pad.[10] Braintree's only financial contributions to the build were the $1.5 million from Petersen's fund.[11]

Petersen Pool[edit]

Petersen Pool is a planned junior-olympic size swimming pool named after August Julius Petersen. The pool will include a 1.2 meter diving board.[12] There will be elevated seating for spectators.[12]

Ice Hockey rinks[edit]

There are two ice hockey rinks planned for the Braintree Athletic Complex. The ice hockey rinks will be frozen with freon, not ammonia to be more friendly to the environment.[6] The main rink can seat 900 people with concessions and other services in the mezzanine that will overlook all the features of the complex.[13] The two rinks will have the logo and colors of Braintree High School. Both the boys' and girls' ice hockey teams will receive there separate locker rooms and a tunnel that leads directly to the bench.[14]

Braintree Youth Hockey (BYH) has had to spend close to $500,000 to rent ice for games and practices in other towns such as Quincy, Milton, Weymouth and Randolph.[15] In January 2014, Braintree mayor, Joseph Sullivan agreed with the people and told them that he would be working on it.[16]

Other features[edit]

An indoor baseball diamond will be located at the complex. It can also be used for 7 on 7 football passing drills, lacrosse and soccer.[17]

A basketball court and multi-use court will also be in the complex along with a conference room.[4]
