Randy Findell (born 12 December 2001), known professionally as Brakence (sometimes stylised as brakence),is an American musician, singer, songwriter, and producer. Findell began posting music under brakence through Bandcamp and SoundCloud in 2016. In 2020, Findell began college in 2019 at Ohio State University, only to dropout a couple days later at 17. This influenced his breakout single “dropout”, and his sophomore album punk2, which as now amassed millions of streams across various platforms.

Early life and career[edit]

Brakence was born in Ohio and had been producing from a young age. Brakence first made his debut at only 14 with his self produced single “fifthenigma.” After being noticed by Corbin Cary of SVNSET WAVES (an independent experimental sound label), he released the single “imintoyou” under the independent label.[1] After this, Corbin asked him to release a full-length ep with the label, he declined, saying: “The project was too vocal heavy for the label.” He released one single from the ep through SVNSET WAVES[2][3], before subsequently and independently releasing his breakthrough album “Hypnagogia” and tracks to follow. He began to gain notoriety in the “anti-pop” scene, due to his stylistic similarities to artists like Eden.[4]

His first track to push him into notability was “sunder” and subsequent releases developed him a cult following on SoundCloud. As his notoriety rose, many fans and community members gained interest in a “face reveal.” Brakence teased this in his following releases of “boywontcry” and “softie”, showing himself covering his face in the official cover art. These singles followed his second ep release “bhavana” which perpetuated his already fast growth. Fans would find themselves an answer for the face reveal when Brakence teamed up with video directing group Overcast to release his first music video for the single newly released single “fuckboy,” which showcased his face reveal in an orange grove. Brakence then released his sophomore record “punk2” which took off. He recorded music videos with Overcast for tracks “dropout” and “fwb.” With now extreme interest in his next ventures, he signed a partnership record deal with Columbia Records and punk2 was re-released with a bonus track: “sauceintherough” as his label debut.[5]

Musical style[edit]

Brakence himself describes his music as “self-care punk.” But with this term being very loose, many people consider his music to be “anti-pop.” Many people also link brakence to the breakthrough of Hyperpop and describe his distorted and pitched vocals as such. This is also supported by his debut label track being produced by Hyperpop pioneer Dylan Brady. However, in many of Brakence’s songs, there isn't much hyperactivity to the tracks. Brakence has also been described as Pop-punk, Glitch hop, Emo, and Pop rock.
