Brazilian phonk is a musical genre inspired by the underground hip hop style called phonk, which originated in the United States in the 1990s. The genre combines elements of funk carioca, electronic music, rap and trap, creating a distinct and aggressive sound, with lyrics that address topics such as violence, drugs, sex and ostentation.[1]
The term “Brazilian phonk” was popularized by the Norwegian producer William Rød, better known as Slowboy, who started to use samples of funk carioca in his songs. He claims that he was influenced by funk after watching videos of bailes on YouTube. Bailes are street parties that take place in favelas and other urban areas, where people dance to funk music and other genres.
One of the most surprising cases of success of Brazilian phonk was that of the Brazilian singer Bibi Babydoll, who scored the song “Automotivo Bibi Fogosa” as the most listened to in Ukraine in 2023. The track, produced by DJ Brunin XM, reached the top of the list of the most listened to songs on Spotify Ukraine, with 10 million listeners, and also led the global playlist of viral tracks on the platform.[2]
