The Breakthrough Party is a democratic socialist political party in the United Kingdom. It is self-proclaimed to be youth-led.[2] It currently has one councillor, Keighley town councillor Samantha Cooper, who defected to the Breakthrough Party from the Labour Party on 16 August 2021.[3]

History[edit]

On 26 January 2021, it was registered with the United Kingdom Electoral Commission to run candidates in English, Scottish and Welsh elections.[4]

The leader of the Breakthrough party, Alex Mays and their candidate in the 2021 Chesham and Amersham by-election Carla Gregory, appeared on Thelma and Tom look left, a podcast hosted by Thelma Walker, former Labour MP for Colne Valley and her friend, Tom Widdicombe. In this episode, episode 16, they spoke about the Breakthrough Party and the Chesham and Amersham by-election.[5]

Elections[edit]

2021 Chesham & Amersham By-election[edit]

On 17 May 2021, the party selected Carla Gregory as its first parliamentary candidate, to stand in the Chesham and Amersham by-election.[2] Gregory came 6th, winning 197 votes equal to about 0.5% of the overall vote.[6]

Future Elections[edit]

They have stated that they are in communication with other ideologically-aligned minor parties such as the Northern Independence Party to avoid running against each other.[2] On 13 September 2021, the party announced it would be standing a candidate in Colchester in the next general election.[7]

Policies and ideology[edit]

During the 2021 Chesham and Amersham by-election, their candidate spoke about her opposition to High Speed 2 (HS2) and she said she wanted a "green council housing project" instead.[8]

The Party members voted to choose 10 core policies until they build their full manifesto to be created "over the next few months"[9]

The ten policies on this platform are:

  1. A £15 real living wage
  2. To scrap zero hours contracts and end "fire and rehire" practices
  3. To renationalise the NHS and social care
  4. To build "genuinely affordable housing" for need not profit
  5. To limit rents to 30% of local income and end no-fault evictions
  6. To introduce a UBI (universal basic income)
  7. To introduce publicly owned utilities, transport and broadband
  8. To defend the right to protest and stand in solidarity with marginalised communities
  9. To collaborate across borders to build a global green new deal
  10. Make votes matter with proportional representation
