Brendan Ahern (born December 31, 1974) is a senior contributor to Forbes magazine[1] and the chief investment officer of KraneShares,[2] a China-focused provider of exchange-traded funds (ETFs). He is also chief editor of online blog China Last Night,[3] which publishes a daily recap aimed at western audiences that provides insight on what drove China's equity, fixed income, and currency markets performance the previous night.[3] Ahern focuses on China and his expertise in ETFs. He has made appearances in Bloomberg,[4] CNBC,[5] The New York Times,[6] and The Wall Street Journal,[7] as well as television appearances on CNBC on matters surrounding Chinese markets.[8] Ahern graduated from the College of the Holy Cross and has a Master of Science in Financial Analysis from the University of San Francisco.[1]

Career[edit]

Ahern was an early pioneer of the US exchange traded fund industry. In 2001, he started his career in ETFs as one of the first 20 employees of BlackRock's iShares, which quickly grew to one of the largest ETF providers in the world. During his tenure at iShares, he assisted its growth from a few million in assets under management to over $1.5 trillion.[9][10] In 2013, Ahern joined KraneShares as chief investment officer and is in charge of the firm's research, education and investor outreach efforts. His role ensures he visits China frequently, he keeps up to date on China's financial news, and is in regular contact with the firm's Chinese partners.

Personal life[edit]

Ahern is native of Connecticut, where he currently lives with his wife Kate and their three children, Mac, Addison, and Grayson.[11] Ahern is a fifth-generation Irish American.[11]
