Brett Stewart (born September 4, 1977) is an American composer, arranger, conductor, and co-founder of Millennial Choirs & Orchestras with his brother, Brandon Stewart.[1]
Early life and education[edit]
Stewart was born in Idaho and raised in Fountain Valley, California.[2]:19–20 He began to study piano at a very young age and began composing full-scale works while in high school.[2]:29–50 He served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Argentina.[2]:61–74
After finishing his missionary service, Stewart attended Brigham Young University, graduating with a Bachelor of Music degree in piano performance. He then earned a Master of Music degree in choral conducting from California State University, Long Beach, and a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Cincinnati – College-Conservatory of Music.[1]
Career[edit]
While working on his master's degree, Stewart taught choir at Fountain Valley High School, his alma mater.[2]:76–89 He had planned to become a university professor, but in the final year of his doctorate program, he felt inspired to found what would eventually become Millennial Choirs & Orchestras (MCO) with his brother in 2007. MCO now serves over 4000 participants annually, with locations in Orange County, California; East Valley, Arizona; Dallas, Texas; Austin, Texas; Utah County, Utah; Davis County, Utah; and Boise, Idaho.[3][4]
Stewart and his brother and their conducting team conduct weekly rehearsals in each of these locations from fall through spring each year. These culminate in two concert series each year,[5] as well as occasional performance tours, such as Washington, D.C., in 2016 (The Music Center at Strathmore); Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2017 (the historic Tabernacle at Temple Square); and New York City, New York, in 2019 (Carnegie Hall).[3]
A noted composer and arranger and a composer-in-residence for MCO, Stewart has composed and arranged well over one hundred works, including the full-length oratorio Messiah in America, and the full-length patriotic work To Be American.[1] His works are performed by choral organizations throughout the world. Many of his works have featured guest artists such as Jenny Oaks Baker, Erin Morley, and David Archuleta.
Family[edit]
The parents of seven children, Stewart and his wife, Mindy, reside in northeast Texas.[1]
