Biography and career[edit]
Qumsiyeh has a bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Bethlehem University, a master's degree in Statistics from Brigham Young University, and a PhD in Statistics from the Middle East Technical University in Turkey.[2]
Qumsiyeh embarked on a diverse career in academia and data analysis with positions at the United Nations Relief and Works Agency, where she contributed to important data-driven initiatives in support of Palestinian refugees. She has also had academic appointments as a professor at Palestine Polytechnic University, Bethlehem University, Arab American University, and BYU-Idaho.[1]
While studying in the U.S., she was baptized into the LDS Church as one of very few Palestinian members.[3] In order to attend church meetings in Jerusalem from her home near Bethlehem she was required to travel under stressful circumstances for hours through military checkpoints to travel only a few miles.[4] She served as an LDS Church missionary in England from 2013 to 2014. In 2018, she began writing extensively on Palestine, the LDS Church, and her personal experiences in both.[5] Her book Peace for a Palestinian: One Woman's Story of Faith Amidst War in the Holy Land recounts the challenges of both living and worshipping in Palestine.[2] Qumsiyeh is a commentator on events in the Middle East.[6]
Personal life[edit]
Born in Jerusalem and raised in Beit Sahour, Palestine, Qumsiyeh is the youngest of six children.[7] She was raised Greek Orthodox.[8] She served as the Relief Society president in the LDS Church's Jerusalem Branch.[1]
