Brian Matthew Barnett (born March 31, 1980) is an American professional wrestler, former professional baseball player,[1] businessman, entrepreneur, and political activist. He has made appearances for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, Asistencia Asesoría y Administración and World Wrestling Federation under the ring name Tyson Tyler.[2]

Baseball career[edit]

Barnett was drafted by the Seattle Mariners after graduating from Saguaro High School in Scottsdale, Arizona.[3] He opted to attend college where he played in the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League, and was an NCAA All American in 2001. In 2002 Barnett signed with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim after his junior year of college.[4] Originally drafted as a catcher, the Angels converted him to pitcher in spring training of 2002. Barnett was assigned to the Mesa Angels where the organization taught him the biomechanics of pitching.[5] After only two months, Barnett was promoted to the Angels short season A affiliate in Provo Utah. In his first appearance Barnett recorded one scoreless inning, striking out future star Prince Fielder, and topped out at 96 mph. As Barnett was warming up to make his second appearance, he suffered a torn ligament on his pitching hand which subsequently ended his 2002 season. The next 5 seasons Barnett was plagued with injuries and played in the San Diego Padres organization, for San Antonio Colts in the independent Texas League, Yuma Scorpions, Niagara Stars of the Canadian Baseball League, and ended his career with the Cincinnati Reds after being released in spring training of 2007.

Professional wrestling career[edit]

In September 2008 Barnett was approached by World Wrestling Entertainment and flown to Stamford, Connecticut for a tryout. After returning to Phoenix he began training with former WWE Superstars Johnny Stamboli and Derrick Neikirk. After six months of training Barnett was booked for a week of WWE live events, where he wrestled in dark matches. Since 2008 performing under the name Tyson Tyler, Barnett has worked internationally with tours of Mexico, Europe, and Japan. At the same time Barnett made appearances at live[6] and televised events for World Wrestling Entertainment, Total Nonstop Action Wrestling, Ring of Honor, and Asistencia Asesoría y Administración. While performing in the U.S. on the independent circuit[7] Barnett had notable feuds with Derrick Neikirk, Bill DeMott, Billy Gunn, Willie Mack, Al Katrazz, Chuck Palumbo, and Johnny Stamboli.[8] In 2012 Barnett formed The Network,[9] a tag team[10] with Stamboli that featured finishing maneuver the G.F.Y.[11] Footage of The Network delivering the G.F.Y., and working with Robocop went viral on YouTube.[12] Barnett participated in the first invited NXT 3 day tryout at Summerslam 2013 in Los Angeles. Barnett is the only active wrestler that has that played for an MLB organization.[13]
