Britannic: Patroness of the Mediterranean is a historical video game developed by Vintage Digital Revival, Inc.[1] and serves as a spinoff for the upcoming game Titanic: Honor and Glory. The game is centered on the HMHS Britannic, a British ocean liner and sister of the RMS Titanic originally intended to serve as a transatlantic passenger liner, but instead was converted into a hospital ship to serve in the Gallipoli Campaign in the wake of the First World War, and sank in the Kea Channel in November 1916.[2] It includes a realistic depiction of the vessel's sinking in real time, as well as tour modes for both external and internal features in both its intended passenger and hospital livery [3][4](though on MacOS the exterior can only be toured in hospital livery).
The game was released on June 19, 2020,[1] to mostly positive reviews, with praise for its graphics and faithfulness to the sinking and its interiors, while most criticism focused on the individually accessible interiors and perceived lack of features.[5][2]
Gameplay[edit]
The game includes the option of either experiencing the ship's sinking in real-time, although the interior can not be explored in this mode; or touring the vessel,[3] which includes detailed depictions of the vessel's interior in both passenger liner and hospital livery, including the Grand Staircase, Georgian first class suites, and Boiler Room 6. On Microsoft Windows, the exterior can be explored in both hospital and passenger liner livery, although in the MacOS version only the HMHS exterior is available. Each area of the vessel can be toured separately through the main menu, and the vessel can't be explored in one sitting. In tour mode, there are also infoboxes that teach about the vessel's design, structure, history, and contributions to the war.[4][6]
The game is set in three locations: Belfast, Ireland; Naples, Italy; and the Kea Channel, near Kea, Greece.
Release and reception[edit]
The game was announced on November 19, 2019.[7] The main trailer for the game was uploaded on April 28, 2020, and has amassed over 116,000 views.[8]
The game launched on June 19, 2020,[1] to mostly positive reviews. Steam rates the game as "very positive" based on 231 reviews, with positive reviews directing praise for its graphics, faithfulness, and detail to the sinking and its interiors, with most negative reviews focused on the repetition of the individual interior cells and lack of features.[5][2]
Development[edit]
Britannic: Patroness of the Mediterranean was developed as a side project of Titanic: Honor and Glory by Digital Revival, Inc., in collaborations with historians, wreck divers, and archivists to ensure accuracy,[6] and musicians for the soundtrack.
