British Rail Locomotive 02 004 also known as D2856 was a diesel shunter that operated with British Railways from 1961 to 1975.[1] This locomotive was part of the Class 02. This Locomotive was one of 3 class 02s to survive long enough to enter TOPS, the locomotive was built by Yorkshire Engine Co. The Unit operated in Allerton depot allongside 02 001 and 02 003 until June 1975 when all 3 units were withdrawn, 02 004 was scrapped the following year.[2]

Operations[edit]

The unit was built and began operations in Yorkshire Engine Co's Meadowhill works, and was later moved to the Liverpool area. In 1966 it was in the docks but after they closed it was moved to Allerton TMD where it worked alongside D2851, D2852 and D2853. D2852 was withdrawn without a proper TOPS classification[3] but the other 3 units survived in Allerton TMD for a little longer.[4] The unit was also seen in Liverpool Exchange much like 02 003 was.[5] In addition the unit was also seen in sandhills depot in 1974.[6] However, due to the Beeching axe, these almost brand new units were already redundant and 02 001, 02 003 and 02 004 were all withdrawn in June of 1975. The unit was scrapped in September 1976, likely the last class 02 to do so.[2]

Models[edit]

Many models in OO Gauge can have 02 004 written on them and D2856 is also directly advertised.[7][8]
