British Rail Locomotive 02 001 also known as D2851 was a diesel shunter that operated with British Railways from 1961 to 1975.[1] This locomotive was part of the Class 02. This Locomotive was one of 3 class 02s to survive long enough to enter TOPS, the locomotive was built by Yorkshire Engine Co. The Unit operated in Allerton depot allongside 02 003 and 02 004 until June 1975 when all 3 units were withdrawn, despite only having had 14 years of work under its belt 02 001 was scrapped shortly afterwards.[2]

Operations[edit]

The unit was built and began operations in Yorkshire Engine Co's Meadowhill works, and was later moved to the Liverpool area. In 1966 it was in the docks but after they closed it was moved to Allerton TMD where it worked alongside D2852, D2853 and D2856.[3][4] D2852 was withdrawn without a proper TOPS classification[3] but the other 3 units survived in Allerton TMD for a little longer.[5] However, due to the Beeching axe, these almost brand new units were already redundant and 02 001, 02 003 and 02 004 were all withdrawn in June of 1975, however 02 001 survived in Allerton for a few months longer before it was scrapped in 1976.

Models[edit]

Train models of the Class 02 can be made with either 02 001 of D2851 written on as their number[6]
