The Bronze Star is the first step towards the lifeguarding certification in Canada. The award is part of the Lifesaving Society's Bronze series of awards. It teaches an understanding of the lifesaving principles embodied in three components of water rescue education: knowledge, skill, and fitness[1]. It is a prerequisite for Bronze Medallion[2]

Prerequisites[edit]

The Lifesaving Society requires Bronze Star candidates have obtained the following certifications, which may be current or expired:

  • None (but Swim Patrol experience recommended)[3]

However, organizations offering Bronze Star courses have implemented supplemental prerequisites based on age and/or swimming experience. Examples include:

  • Aqua Essence Swim Academy - Age 11 Years and Older[4]
  • Cape Breton YMCA - Age 12 Years and Older[5]
  • City of Calgary - Age 12 Years and Older[6]
  • Calgary YMCA - Age 8 - 13[7]
  • City of Toronto - Age 9 Years and Older[8]
