Beach Run
Beach Run is a sport that is based in races on beach sand. Beach Run can be developed on compact sand or non-compact sand.
History[edit]
The origin of Beach Run is in the Beach Run competitions of the 1960s Easter Beach Run at Daytona (Florida), Annual Seaside Beach Run in the city of Seaside (Oregon) and the Gurnet Classic Beach Run at Duxbury, (Massachusetts).[1]
Bill Rodgers and Alberto Salazar competed in The Gurnet Classic.[2]
International Federation[edit]
Today, Beach Run on non-compact sand as a sport in the International Life Saving Federation (ILS), with distances of 1 or 2 km.[3]
International Olympic Committee[edit]
On the occasion of the 105th session of the International Olympic Committee in Atlanta from 15 to 18 July 1996, the International Life Saving Federation, with its different sports specialties (Beach Run on non-compact sand, etc...),[4] are recognized by the International Olympic Committee.[5]
Great distances[edit]
There are competitions of Beach Run on non-compact sand in great distances (20 km - 24 hours).[6]
World Records[edit]
Also, there are world records of Beach Run on non-compact sand in great distances.[7]
Other competitions[edit]
In 2011, a private initiative created in USA a World Championships of compact sand Beach Run, admitted in the calendar of the USATF (USA Track & Field), the Athletics Federation of USA.[8]
Beach Walking[edit]
An important variant of Beach Run is Beach Walking. Beach Walking is based on walk on the sand of the beach. The origin of Beach Walking is in the Beach Run competitions of the 1960s. Beach Walking can be developed on compact sand or non-compact sand and has a specific technique of walk.[9]
