Bruce Hughes (born January 19, 1961) is an American musician, bassist, singer-songwriter, music producer based in Austin, Texas.
Born in Waco, Texas, Hughes grew up in Austin, Texas, and started playing in garage bands in the early 1970s. After his family moved several times during his teen years, Hughes moved back to Austin to attend the University of Texas.
Hughes was a member of several bands in the 1980s, many at the same time, including local Austin groups Stick Figures, Dark Motive, Skank, True Believers and Minus Grace, and a short stint with British performance artist Arthur Brown (including an appearance on Solid Gold.[1]
In late 1986 Hughes started recording tracks with Poi Dog Pondering, and became a regular member of the band when they migrated to Austin in early 1987. Hughes played bass/sang back-up vocals in Poi Dog from 1986-1992, during which they released 3 studio albums (two on Columbia Records). After leaving Poi Dog in 1992, Hughes played with several bands (Teratoma, Atlantic Soul Revue, Ugly Americans) before joining Cracker on their 1993-1994 Kerosene Hat tour.
