Bruno Botta is a chemist and an academic. He is the rector of Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome.
Education
Botta got his Master's degree in 1977 at the Sapienza University of Rome.[1] He was a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Chemistry of the University of British Columbia (UBC, Vancouver).[2]
Career
Botta was an assistant professor at the Catholic University of Rome from 1981 to 1992. Between 1992 and 2001, he was appointed as an associate professor of organic chemistry at the "Sapienza" University of Rome (Faculty of Pharmacy) and became a full professor in 2001. In 2023, he was appointed as the rector of Unitelma Sapienza University of Rome.[3] For the Italian publishing house Edi-Ermes, he has authored and edited two textbooks on organic chemistry.[4][5]
Research
Botta's research work has been centered on organic chemistry, with a particular focus on the fields of natural products chemistry and supramolecular chemistry. He has worked on prenylated flavonoids, specifically 8-prenyl naringenin, xanthumol, and artelastin, and has identified them as important cancer chemotherapeutic compounds.[6] He has also worked on synthetic organic chemistry,[7] with an emphasis on understanding of how reaction temperature controls exo/endo diastereoselectivity.[8] He has identified plants as a source of secondary metabolites,[9] screened 1,000 natural products from an in-house library, and documented that these metabolites possess antimicrobial and anticancer potential, which is regulated by autophagic mechanisms.[10] He has also highlighted alkaloids as a significant source of synthetic and semisynthetic compounds[11] and has focused on the synthesis and design of Hedgehog pathway inhibitors[12] based on isoflavone scaffold.[13] Furthermore, he has also identified ARNT inhibitors as antibiotic adjuvants.[14]
Botta chaired the COST Action CM1407, "Challenging Organic Syntheses Inspired by Nature – From Natural Products Chemistry to Drug Discovery".[15] Alongside COST Action, his research group has worked on natural products for their antimicrobial activity[16] as well as antibacterial, antiviral, and antineoplastic properties.[17] He has also studied the association between resorcin[4]arene V and pyrimidine nucleosides, providing insights into precise molecular recognition and the conceptualization of new medication carriers.[18] He has worked on "humanized chimeric Archaeal ferritin",[19] which significantly improved the effective and encapsulation delivery of siRNA.[20]
