Buck Arnold was the 6th football coach at Harding College, in 1929 and 1930.
A former Bison player for the previous two years in 1927-28, he was elevated to player-coach when Coach Frank Turbeville had moved on.[1]
When everyone arrived for the 1929 season, there was not one letterman from the previous year present, except for Arnold. He was forced at that time to cancel the regular college schedule that they had been growing accustomed to. Instead, the only option Harding had was to quickly schedule four high schools and two low quality college teams.[2]
The 3-1-2 result on the year included wins over 3 high schools, an embarrassing 7-41 loss to Clarksville High School, a tie against Hendrix-Henderson, and a one-point victory over lowly Jonesboro Baptist College.[3]
The 1930 season began with only 7 returning players from the previous year, so that Coach Arnold was in near the same position as the previous year, needing to rebuild the team in a hurry. The program had been decimated so much that the progress Harding had made playing nose-to-nose with Ozarks, Ouachita and others, had been watered down to playing those team's freshmen and B-teams again.[4]
The 1930 team finished with a record of 4-5, and Buck Arnold moved on, replaced as coach for 1931 by Paul Fiser.
