The Tunisia versus Egypt football match was held on 11 December 1977 (1977-12-11) at Stade olympique d'El Menzah in El Menzah, Tunis. It was part of the last matchday of the final qualification round in CAF for the 1978 FIFA World Cup. Tunisia won the match and qualified for the World Cup for the first time.[1]

Leading up to the match[edit]

Three countries (Tunisia, Egypt and Nigeria) participated in the last round of the African zone qualifiers, qualifying for a place in the 1978 FIFA World Cup finals in Argentina. The six finalists played each other in a round robin format for the matches that took place between 25 September and 11 December. After five rounds of matches and with one match left for each team, the standings looked as follows.[2]

After the match, Tunisia moved up from last place to the top and qualified for the World Cup for the first time ever, after two wins, a draw and a defeat and collected five points. While Egypt, which qualified for the World Cup only once in 1934, failed to achieve qualification this time, after two wins and two defeats.[3]

Nigeria, bottom of the group, completed the qualifiers with one victory, a draw and two defeats, although it was a strong candidate to qualify for the World Cup. Mahmoud El Khatib is the top scorer in the African qualifiers with 6 goals.
