In Islam, Buhtan (Arabic: بهتان) is an Arabic term that refers to slander, lying, or defamation. It is regarded as a severe form of defamation involving the deliberate fabrication of falsehoods intended to impair an individual's reputation, honor, and standing.

Etymology

In Arabic lexicography, buhtan is an abstract noun derived from the triconsonantal root B-H-T (ب-ه-ت). Traditional Arabic dictionaries, such as Lisan al-Arab, record that the primary semantic core of this root denotes astonishment, bewilderment, or being struck dumb with surprise. The active verb bahata (بَهَتَ) signifies the act of accusing falsely or confronting someone with an unexpected fabrication.

Lexicographers note a direct functional link between the root meaning of bewilderment and the descriptive noun. A false charge is referred to as buhtan because the sheer groundlessness of the accusation is said to leave the targeted individual stunned or speechless in disbelief. Structurally, the nominal form employs the intensive suffix -an (ـَان), which conventionally signifies magnitude or intensity in the underlying action or state.
