Bukas Luluhod ang mga Tala (Tomorrow, the stars will kneel) is a 1985 Filipino film by Viva films. Directed by Emmanuel H. Borlaza, story by Nerissa Cabral, and screenplay by Jose N. Carreon and Orlando Nadres. The film was released on July 11, 1984.[1] The film stars Sharon Cuneta, Eddie Rodriguez, Gina Pareno, Pilar Pilapil, Tommy Abuel, Rey “PJ” Abellana, Raymond Lauchengco, Lani Mercado, Eula Valdez, and Janet Elisa Giron as young Rebecca. The film is about a girl who was born in a dirt-poor family who swore revenge to the rich family that kept wronging them.

The film is based on Nerissa Cabral's Pilipino Komiks. The theme song "Pangarap ng Bituin" is sung by Sharon Cuneta and composed by Willy Cruz.[2]

Plot[edit]

When Fidela (Gina Pareño) gives birth in the middle of the street, her husband Ador (Tommy Abuel) asks the wealthy neighbor Don Roman Estrella (Eddie Rodriguez) and Donya Monica Estrella (Pilar Pilapil) to bring them in the hospital with their car, Monica steps on the pedal to ignore the help. The townspeople then helped Fidela give birth. She names the baby Rebecca, after Ador’s mother. Later that night, Monica, who is also pregnant, confronts Roman and argues the whole neighborhood knows that Roman is the father of Fidela’s child. She also states that he only married her to get out of their family’s debt. Hearing the fight, Donya Concha, Roman’s mother passes away. Ador reassures to Fidela that he will treat Rebecca just like his own child. Not long after, Fidela gave birth to Jun. Ador’s son. Rebecca grew up to be great singer, she even joins amateur singing contest. One day, while peddling for newspaper and bottles, Rebecca and Jun moons at the Estrella children and envies over the number of toys they have. Monica, who sees the two, berates the kids and throws a rock at Jun causing an wound. Roman chases Rebecca and Jun to comfort but Rebecca refused the help. Ador finds out about the incident and tries to confront Monica but she releases a vicious dog which mauls Ador. The whole neighborhood watches as Ador bleeds to death, Roman arrives to explain that he has nothing to do with it but Fidela, Rebecca and Jun refused to believe.

Years have passed, Rebecca (Sharon Cuneta) and Jun (Raymond Lauchengco) continue peddling while Fidela continues as laundry do-er. On her first nationwide appearance, Rebecca sings “Pangarap na Bituin” while the whole neighborhood watches including the Estrella children; Alice (Lani Mercado) and Monet (Eula Valdez) Monica walks in and sees Rebecca performing. Rebecca wins the competition. Alice and Monet bullies Rebecca by bumping into her while riding a bike. Jun, who was nearby confronts the two sisters but Roman interrupts and commands Alice and Monet to go home. Rebecca and Jun overhear the gossipers close by that Rebecca is Roman and Fidela’s child. That night, Rebecca confronts her mother and she explains that she was pregnant with her when Donya Concha offers her money to stay away from Roman but she refuses. Rebecca swears that she will take revenge on Estrella family ("Bukas Luluhod ang mga tala"). Monica’s family businesses start collapsing due to Roman’s carelessness. When Rebecca prioritizes her singing career, Roman visits her on one of her shows but she boldly kicks him out. He overhears that he has no role in her life anymore. Monica catches Roman visiting Fidela’s home on the Rebecca’s birthday. Monica then slaps Fidela but Rebecca shows up to defend her mother while the whole neighborhood watches. On his first day of college, Jun sees Monet on the same college. Alice dares Monet to lead Jun into believing she is in love with him.

As Rebecca’s career grows, (including playing a lead role with Boyet De Leon (played by Christopher De Leon)), Alice reveals to her boyfriend, Dante, who is a fan of Rebecca that she is not fond of her. Monica persuades the company that handles Rebecca to drop her and she will buy the remaining stocks of the company but the head of the company declines. Rebecca’s family now moves in the house in front of the Estrella house. Jun, who is dating Monet, tries pick up her at their home, but Monet and Monica kick him out, humiliating him. Alice’s jealousy and hatred of Rebecca grows stronger that she breaks up with Dante on his birthday for bringing her to see Rebecca perform. Dante continues to support Rebecca and even follows their car after the show, scaring the Rebecca and Bing. Dante is rejected by Rebecca. The incident prompted Bing to buy a gun for their safety, but it upsets Fidela during a dinner and Jun hides the gun. He then uses the same gun to kidnap Monet and explains to her that he and his family does not deserve the hate they receive. Jun harasses Monet, but the police arrive in time. The Estrella family sues Jun for attempted rape and kidnapping. Rebecca visits Roman to convince him to drop the lawsuit but Roman has to talk to his wife first, the two share a connection for the first time. Rebecca sees her mother in the hallway, and she reveals that her father might have changed. However, Jun is sent to jail for six to eight years. Outside of the court, the two families collided, and Rebecca reveals that she is upset with her father. Despite rejecting Dante before, Rebecca starts dating him. One night in a restaurant, Alice spots Dante and Rebecca and causes a scene, Rebecca declines to fight. She reveals to Dante her history with Alice but reassures that she won’t use him as a revenge to Alice. As Alice develops drug addiction, the Estrella family put up an offer to their house and Rebecca is interested as an anonymous buyer. Monet catches Alice using drugs and during the confrontation, she blames everyone in her life as to why she uses drugs, moments later, Roman suffers from extreme fatigue. Rebecca officially buys the Estrella house but on the same night, while she is with Dante and Bing; was stabbed in the back by Alice. Rebecca fortunately lives. Roman sends Alice to a rehabilitation center and Monica talks Roman about preferring his child with Fidela than their own. Roman visits Rebecca in the hospital and pleads to drop the lawsuit, but Rebecca recounts the time she begged Roman to drop the case on Jun. Monet, who happened to hear the conversation convinces Jun to ask his sister to drop the case, but he turns her down. Monica asks Fidela how much it would take to drop the lawsuit but Fidela states that it is out of her hands. Monica signs the documents selling the house to the mysterious buyer.

Rebecca, Fidela, and Dante visit Ador’s grave, Rebecca reveals her plan to buy the Estrella house out of revenge, but both Fidela and Dante disapprove of plan. Jun appears revealing that he is free but on parole and Fidela asks Rebecca to forgive the Estrella family and let go of the anger while everything is in the right place. On the day of their moving out, Rebecca reveals herself to be the buyer and gives the documents of the house to her father. She insists that the Estrella family stay on the house and end the feud between the two families. She offers herself available to Roman. Monica talks to Rebecca, asking for forgiveness and thanks her. On her way out, Dante catches Rebecca and asks to go out but Rebecca insists to go to a church and pray for her father. The film ends with Rebecca singing the chorus of “Pangarap na Bituin” while a montage of the movie plays.

The film received 5 FAMAS nominations (Best Supporting Actress for Gina Pareno, Best Child Actress for Janet Elisa Giron, Best Story for Nerissa Cabral, Best Sound for Rolly Ruta, Best Musical Score for Willy Cruz) and won Best Sound and Best Musical Score.[3]
