Bukhara State Medical Institute (uzb:Buxoro Davlat Tibbiyot Instituti, ru: Бухарский государственный медицинский институт) BSMI is a higher educational medical institution in Bukhara, Uzbekistan, established in 1990. The Institute is recognized by NMC (National Medical Commission), MCI (Medical Council of India), WHO (World Health Organisation), UNESCO (The United Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation), and from other major medical bodies across the world.[1]

History[edit]

Bukhara State Medical Institute was founded in October 1990. In March 1991, by the decision of the Presidium of the Bukhara Regional Council of People’s Deputies, he was named “Abu Ali ibn Sino”. The Faculty of Medicine was established in 1991, the Faculty of Dentistry in 1992, the Department of Highly Qualified Nurses in 1999, the Department of Medical Pedagogy in 2001, and the Department of Pediatrics in 2016. As of 2018, 2 new directions have been established in the field of medical prevention and medical biology.

At present, the institute has 8 faculties, 41 departments, including bachelor’s degree in 8 areas, master’s degree in 23 specialties and clinical residency in more than 40 specialties and 20 joint programs. A total of more than 4,700 students and residents are enrolled in the lim programs. The institute currently offers classes in Uzbek, Russian, English and Turkish.[2][3]

Overview[edit]

The number of faculties and departments: Currently there are 7 faculties (General medicine, Dentistry, Pediatrics, Medical biology, Medical Pedagogy, Preventive Medicine, Higher nursing and International faculty), 38 departments, 15 Bachelors and 48 Master’s degree programs.

The number of total academic staff is 381 out of which 30 doctors of sciences, 184 candidates of sciences, docents, PhDs, 167 teachers.

The number of students: total 3823 students. 3324 of them studying in Bachelor, 124 in Master’s, 365 in Clinical internship and 10 in Residency programs. There are 310 international students from Turkmenistan, Russia, India, Tajikistan, Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Azerbaijan and Ukraine.

Faculities[edit]

Today the institute is organised into six faculties: the medical faculty; faculty of dentistry; faculty of medical education and higher nursing; faculty of pediatrics; medical biology and medical prevention; international faculty, and advanced training faculty for physicians.[4]

Faculty of Medicine[edit]

The Faculty of Treatment (Medicine) has been operating as part of the Bukhara State Medical Institute since its foundation in 1990. The faculty prepares doctors in the specialty “General Practitioner” in the direction of “Treatment” . The term of study at the faculty is 6 years. Students from all regions of our country study at the Faculty of General Medicine. In addition, students from foreign and CIS countries have been studying. In the period 1991-2020, 4817 students were admitted to the medical faculty and 4792 students were graduated.

Research work[edit]

The scientific council of the Faculty of General Medicine consists of 22 professors, the chairman of the trade union, the chairman of the youth movement and 6 students. The faculty has developed an action plan for the systematic organization of spiritual and educational work, increasing the intellectual potential, consciousness and worldview of students, strengthening ideological immunity, educating a harmoniously developed generation living in patriotism, love and devotion to the people. The Academic Council of the Faculty analyzes the course of educational, methodological, scientific, spiritual and educational work of young people, the level of use of interactive methods, corrects the shortcomings and measures that are necessary.[5]

Faculty of Medicine and Pedagogy and Higher Nursing[edit]

Faculty of Dentistry[edit]

The Faculty of Dentistry was founded in 1991-1992 as part of the Medical Faculty of Bukhara State Medical Institute. In 1993, the Faculty of Dentistry was separated in the form of a faculty. In 1993, the leadership of the institute and the head of the Bukhara Regional Health Department, Ph.D. M.M. By the order of Abdurahmanov, the Bukhara regional dental polyclinic No. 2 was opened. In 1994-1995, the department of “Orthopedic Dentistry” was established. In 1996, the old kindergarten building in the Sharq-1 district was renovated as an internship base for several departments of the Faculty of Dentistry. In 1997, the department of “Orthopedic Dentistry” was housed in this building.

Faculty of Pediatrics[edit]

Pediatric direction in the 2016-2017 academic year pediatrics and medical science were combined as part of the faculty. From 2017 to 2021  Pediatrics, medicine, prophylaxis, medicine, biology, medicine, pharmacy, culture, culture of activity are organized. It was established on August 27, 2021 on the basis of the minutes of the 1st meeting of the Institute’s Council and the order of the Director of the Institute dated August 30, 2021.The faculty trains students in the direction of Pediatrics. The faculty has 565 students, including 16 international students. The faculty has 254 students, including 311 children.

The faculty trains doctors in the direction of “pediatric business ” general practitioner”. The term of study at the faculty is 6 years. The number of students at the faculty is 565, including 16 foreign students. At the faculty, 254 students study on the basis of state grants, 311-on a contract basis.

Children from all regions of the republic study at the pediatric faculty. Also, entrepreneurial states and CIS students also study. The weight of the contingent of students is increasing at the faculty.

Scientific council structure[edit]

13 professors and teachers, including the chairman of the trade union, the head of the Institute’s youth and 4 students, carry out their activities once a month on the basis of the approved work plan of the Academic Council. The scientific council discusses the implementation of resolutions and decrees of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, resolutions and decrees of the Cabinet of Ministers, internal orders of the Ministry of Higher and Secondary Special Education and the Ministry of Health, as well as the Institute. The Academic Council of the faculty will analyze the progress of educational, methodical, scientific, spiritual, educational, youth and therapeutic work at the departments, the level of use of interactive methods, corrected shortcomings and developed an action plan[7]

Preventive medicine, biomedical, folk medicine faculty[edit]

Faculties of Preventive Medicine, Biomedical and Folk Medicine have been operating as part of the Bukhara State Medical Institute since August 29, 2018. The faculty trains doctors in the specialty “general practitioner” in the direction of “medical-preventive, medical-biological and folk medicine ». The term of study at the Faculty of Preventive Medicine is 5 years, at the faculties of Biomedical and Folk Medicine is 4 years. Students from all regions of our country study at the faculties. In addition, students from foreign countries and CIS countries study. The number of students at the faculty is growing.

The faculty has 4 doctors of medical sciences, professors, 29 candidates of medical sciences and 19 associate professors.

Scientists of the departments of faculties actively participate in research work. In clinical units, therapeutic, diagnostic and preventive scientific research is carried out to improve the quality and results of medical services. More than 40 teachers of the faculty have advanced their qualifications in major foreign centers, many of our teachers have participated in prestigious international conferences. Scientific work is carried out jointly with leading clinics and specialists of the world.

The faculty has a Council of Faculties, which meets and solves problematic issues of the department every month[8]

Educational and methodical work[edit]

Since the establishment of the faculties, a lot of work has been done to improve the quality of education, new methods of conducting classes have been developed. The departments of the faculties have 6 teaching and clinical bases, 8 lecture halls and more than 80 classrooms. In addition, hospitals, clinics, computers and classrooms are equipped with modern educational furniture, computers and multimedia projectors, electronic whiteboards. The department is located in clinical bases, which students have the opportunity to acquire modern practical skills.

 The forms and methods of the educational process are constantly being updated and improved. At the faculties, students study according to the credit-modular system in accordance with the Bologna educational process. To this end, in the pedagogical process, much attention is paid to such methods as self-preparation of students, solving test problems, acquiring practical skills. The rating system allows for more creative use of teaching and control methods, taking into account the individual training of students.

The training is conducted in Uzbek, Russian and English languages in accordance with the qualification requirements of a doctor of medicine (physician) in the direction of “Medical-preventive.

  The scientific work carried out by the scientists of the faculty is closely connected with the training of scientific and pedagogical personnel and specialists in the requirements of practical healthcare. It should also be noted that the faculty’s scientists regularly participate in competitions for grants for research. Much attention is paid to working with gifted students, they took an active part in the work of student scientific circles, represented the institute at republican Olympiads, made presentations at republican and international scientific conferences, were awarded diplomas. Some of them have identified topics for future master’s and doctoral theses.

Spiritual and educational work of faculties[edit]

One of the main activities of the faculties is the formation of student’s moral values, interest in professional activity, the need for a healthy lifestyle, involvement in the social and cultural activities of the Institute. To fulfill these tasks, the faculty has a pedagogical council, which carries out its activities in accordance with the approved plan. In each group of the faculty there is a coach who is selected from experienced teachers. Since the 2021-2022 academic year, a staff of instructors has been allocated, which they fully deal with the moral conditions, upbringing and problems of second and third-year students. In order to spend their free time usefully, students of the faculty, under the guidance of coaches, participate in mass events, amateur performances, visit historical monuments and sights of Bukhara, other cities of the republic, theaters and museums.

Faculty of advanced training for doctors[edit]

The Faculty of Advanced Medical Training was established at the Bukhara State Medical Institute. Abu Ali ibn Sino on the basis of the Agreement between the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Uzbekistan and BGMI No. 1 dated 15.05.2015, by order of BGMI No. 224/4 dated 03.07.2015. Its main task was to continue the work on retraining and advanced training of doctors. To date, an important area is the additional professional education of practitioners, which is currently being implemented in the course of educational programs of various durations, taking into account the requirements of the model of continuing medical education. The purpose, objectives and direction of activity of the Faculty of Advanced Training of Doctors is the training, advanced training and professional retraining of medical personnel who are competitive in the conditions of rapid development of medical technologies, capable of as a result At the departments of the faculty, doctors are trained in cycles of improvement, primary specialization. Upon completion of the training, it is possible to pass a certification exam with a specialist certificate. FUV works in accordance with the training and production plan, which is approved at a meeting of the Academic Council after coordination with the territorial health authority with subsequent approval by the Ministry of Health of Uzbekistan. The faculty consists of 1 department and 3 courses: – Department of Retraining and Advanced training of family doctors – The course of “Emergency ambulance and resuscitation” – Course “Obstetrics and gynecology” – Course of “Dentistry”[9]
