Bulgarian Sociological Association (BSА) is a professional non-profit organization uniting individual and collective members engaged in research and teaching activities in the field of sociology. Bulgarian Sociological Association is a member of the International Sociological Association.

History[edit]

Bulgarian Scientific and Sociological Society[edit]

The first professional sociological organization in Bulgaria was the Bulgarian Scientific and Sociological Society, established in 1932 in Sofia. Its goals and tasks were to develop the scientific problems of sociology, to disseminate sociological knowledge, to organize scientific meetings, public discussions and more. Its founders and members were Kiril Grigorov, Sava Ganovski, Evgeni Kamenov, Ivan Kinkel, Todor Pavlov, Nikola Sakarov, Todor Samodumov. Its activity was discontinued in 1939.[1]

Sociological Society[edit]

In 1959 a Sociological Society was established, which in the same year was accepted as a member of the International Sociological Association.

Bulgarian Sociological Association[edit]

In April 1969 the Sociological Society was transformed into the Bulgarian Sociological Association. One of the most important international events organized by BSA at the very beginning of its existence was the Seventh World Congress of Sociology, September 14-19, 1970, in Varna.[2] Approximately 3200 sociologists from 14 countries took part and over 1040 papers were presented.[3]

On July 6, 2001 at the General Assembly a new Statute of BAS[4] was adopted At the General Assembly on May 11, 2004 the Code of Ethics of BAS[5] was adopted. They become the main normative documents around which the activity of the Association is built.

Sociological Problems Journal[edit]

The Bulgarian Sociological Association publishes together with Institute of Philosophy and Sociology at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences - Sociological Problems Journal - the only specialized academic journal in the field of sociology in Bulgaria. The journal provides an arena of intellectual debate related to the formation of critical political discourse and the instrumentalization of sociological science not only within the framework of Bulgaria but on an international scale.[6]

Parnters[edit]

In organizing its events, BAS cooperates closely with the university departments of sociology at Sofia University, Plovdiv University "Paisii Hilendarski", Southwestern University "Neofit Rilski" and University of National and World Economy, as well as with the student's clubs at these departments.

Awards[edit]

The Bulgarian Sociological Association organizes competitions for the best publication of a young sociologist in Bulgaria.
