Bumba's World Trip (Dutch: Op Reis Met Bumba) is a dark ride in the Belgian theme park Plopsaland De Panne and opened on July 21, 2023[1][2] in the Circus Bumba indoor area. The attraction revolves around the popular Belgian children's series "Bumba".

Ride[edit]

Queue[edit]

The entrance to the attraction is located at the back of the "Circus Bumba" hall. Visitors enter the queue through a small circus tent that gives access to the queue. The queue consists of 2 parts, a part next to the station in the hall and an extra room designed as a living room. The queue in the hall is partly decorated with cartoon-like trees and stringlights.

Station[edit]

On both sides of the station, where the cars drive in and out, there is an orange arch with lights. Via a wooden platform, visitors step into one of the red vehicles, with license plate 2-bum-023 (a reference to the main character and the opening year).

The vehicles have 2 bench seats with a seatbelt. The first row is very small and therefore only accessible to children.[2] There is a decorative steering wheel and 2 push buttons that allow passengers to choose to hear the narrative voice in Dutch or French.[2]

Scènes[edit]

When the vehicle leaves, a red curtain opens and the passengers see a suitcase hanging on a door. Passengers ride past 9 different scenes, such as Asia, the North Pole, Space, The Jungle, an underwater world and the circus.[2] At the end of the ride, Bumba can be seen sleeping in his bed.

Technology[edit]

The ride system with the vehicles was supplied by Metallbau Emmeln[3] from Germany. A total of 10 vehicles can drive in the course at the same time. In practice, only a maximum of 8 vehicles are used.

In the first weeks after the opening, the attraction had a lot of start-up problems, for example, only 6 vehicles could be used at the same time for a long time, which could increase the waiting time considerably. To inform visitors, a sign was placed at the entrance of the attraction warning that the queue could increase because the attraction was still in a testing phase.[4] It is the first dark ride for Metallbau Emmeln.

The attraction contains more than 150 moving elements and 50 animatronics[3] built by the Belgian studio Fisheye.[3][5] Furthermore, 250 theater fixtures, 30 projectors and screens and 200 network devices are used.[6][7]

Capacity[edit]

In the first weeks after the opening, the capacity of the vehicles was limited to 4 people, 2 children up to 1.40m in the front and 2 adults in the back. On September 1, 2023, the capacity was adjusted to 6 people per vehicle. 3 children up to 1.20m tall are now allowed to sit at the front and 2 adults with a baby at the back.[4]

The effects and scenes in the attraction are programmed in such a way that a vehicle can start approximately every 20 seconds, but in practice it is impossible to start the cars so quickly one after the other because visitors need more time to get in.

Trivia[edit]

  • The music in the attraction is an instrumental version of "Het grote Bumba circuslied" (The Great Bumba Circus Song) and has its own version for each scene. The music is 21 seconds long and is constantly looped, meaning it can be heard approximately 1,400 times on an average opening day of 8 hours.
  • The cost of building "Circus Bumba", including the dark ride, was 12.5 million euros.[2]
