Burning Japan is an official Burning Man regional[1] event. It shares the same vision and principles as Burning Man, fostering active participation, encouraging everyone to contribute and engage in acts of giving. Alongside captivating artworks, performances, and music, participants provide all the essentials for daily life, collectively creating an imaginary village of over 500 vibrant souls that will eventually be restored to its pristine state.

Description[edit]

While the number of participants so far has ranged from 100 to 700, which is significantly fewer compared to the approximately 70,000 participants of the original Burning Man, the event continues to be held with the primary objective of establishing an experimental community that shares the same values as Burning Man.

During the event, participants engage in outdoor camping and offer each other art and various other contributions known as "theme camps." These theme camps are highly diverse, encompassing performances, workshops, shared food and drinks, and even DJs with their own sound systems. Money is not used within the venue, and instead, a culture of giving prevails, where participants generously contribute to one another.

Similar to Burning Man, a central point of focus at this event is the "Burn." This involves setting wooden structures ablaze on the evening before the event's final day. In 2018, a wooden "Temple" was constructed, leading to both the Phoenix Burn and the Temple Burn. In 2019, although the Temple was built prior to the event, Typhoon 20 forced the cancellation of the Burning Japan event.

Adhering to the principle of "Leave no trace" post-event, participants diligently clean up and ensure the venue is restored to its original state. The event's funding relies on ticket sales to cover expenses and refrains from seeking sponsorships.
