Burning Song is an album by American composer Kali Malone, set for release on October 30, 2026, through Ideologic Organ. It features seven compositions performed by Malone on organ, Lucy Railton on cello, and Stephen O'Malley on guitar. The same trio performed on the composer's 2023 album Does Spring Hide Its Joy.[1][2]

Background

The album was recorded at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, Germany, where the German Baroque composer and musician Johann Sebastian Bach served as cantor for the last 27 years of his life and where his grave is currently held. For Burning Song, Malone performed on the church's Bach organ, tuned to Baroque standards, being the first musician to play contemporary works on the instrument. She was joined by Lucy Railton on cello and Stephen O'Malley on bowed acoustic guitar, previously enlisted on Does Spring Hide Its Joy (2023). The recording happened over the course of two nights in August 2025 with the assistance of the engineer Francesco Donadello.[1]

The first half of Burning Song was commissioned for the 2023 instalment of Venice Biennale festival, presented in San Pietro di Castello, whereas the latter three were composed a month before the album's recording session in Leipzig.[1]

On September 1, 2026, Malone released "Heavy with Fruit", announcing the release of Burning Song and European tour dates.[2] "Heavy with Fruit" was accompanied by a music video portraying a pile of burning wood logs on a seashore slowly being consumed by an incoming tide.[3]
