"Burnout" is the sixth episode of the first season of the Syfy television series Warehouse 13. It first aired August 4, 2009, and was written by Matthew Federman & Stephen Scaia and directed by Constantine Makris.
While investigating the site of a presumed gas explosion, Pete and Myka are shocked to discover the body of another Warehouse agent. Things get even more complicated when the artifact they're hunting attaches itself to Pete's spine. It causes him to channel dangerous amounts of electricity and makes him aggressive and dangerous. This is the introduction of Rebecca St. Claire, a former Warehouse agent (played by Roberta Maxwell).
Plot[edit]
Pete and Myka are sent to St Louis, Mo to the scene of an explosion that killed 6 people. In the tunnel under the building they find the desiccated body of an unknown previous warehouse agent.
Artie and Claudia begin to try to figure out the identity of the agent using a Bell and Howell's spectroscope Claudia modified to work with the warehouse computers.
In St Louis, the agents discover a person missing from the scene, Reggie, who has run from the scene. Reggie talks to his gang, who then all are attacked. Pete and Myka find an unturned hand print on one of the bodies of the gang members.
Artie and Claudia determine the missing agent to be Jack Secord, who went missing in 1962. They access his room stored in the archive, and find the address of Rebecca St. Clair. They send Pete and Myka to meet with her.
At Rebecca's house, they tell her that Jack was found. Rebecca reveals that she knew Jack and when Myka receives a call about another victim, she asks if others have been electrocuted. They leave and arrive at the scene, where the only witness states that the person who they are looking for is a cop, officer Clark. The agents travel to Clark's address where they see him jump from a window and runs away and does a few blocks away. They notice a device on his back that is not present when they find his body. They send images to Arty of the marks on Clark's back that match those on Secord's back. Myka realizes that Rebecca knows about the electrocutions, and they go to speak with her and discover that she, too was an agent. Artie finds the object is an 11th-century device, and Rebecca states that Secord went to investigate a museum display with it, and never returned. Rebecca never went back to the warehouse, changed her last name and vanished. Pete finds a manuscript that calls it The Spine of Saracen, used to enhance crusaders.
Pete and Myka go to investigate the alley where Clark fell, and find another man dying and emitting electricity. The man dies, but the spine has already vanished. Looking for it, Pete shoves Myka out of the way and the spine attaches to him, Myka is knocked out while trying to remove it. Pete runs off, and once Myka wakes up, she heads to find Pete who has headed to the station to use the generators to prevent himself from harming anyone. Pete asks Myka for help in electrocuting the spine, but she is unable to risk harming Pete. Rebecca steps in and holds the cables to the spine, rendering Pete unconscious and freeing the spine. Rebecca then smashes the spine. Myka revives Pete.
At the warehouse, Rebecca meets Artie and Claudia. Claudia gives Rebecca the ring that Jack Secord was going to give her.
Artifacts[edit]
Spine of the Saracen Main artifact of the episode. This artifact attached itself to Pete's spine. It increases aggression, strength and stamina. It allows heat transfer, and drains the life of the victim it attaches to until it kills them, at which point it looks for another host. It may only be removed with a very strong electric shock.
Bell and Howell Spectroscope: Projects holograms. Claudia connects it to the Warehouse computers.
Body Scanner: Scans bodies and connects to the spectroscope so the spectroscope can display a hologram of the body.
Personnel Quarters Archive: A storage device of rooms inside the Warehouse, modular rooms from Leena's Bed and Breakfast. Contains the personal effects of agents who have disappeared or died.
Albert Einstein's Comb, Edward Teller's Micro-Fission Reactor, Egg of Colombus, Guglielmo Marconi's Oscillator, Joseph Goebbel's Radio, William Gilbert’s (Lodestone) Amber, and Babylonian Battery: artifacts mentioned capable of electrocution.
