The Butterfly Conservation Society of Sri Lanka (Sinhalese: ශ්‍රී ලංකා සමනල සංරක්ෂණ සංසදය), commonly abbreviated as BCSSL is a non-profit organization based on Sri Lanka, working towards the conservation of Butterflies and other lesser-known Insect species. It is the first organization in Sri Lanka to specifically focus on Butterfly Conservation[1][2]. BCSSL has contributed for the conservation of butterflies and other insect species in Sri Lanka in various ways, including awareness programs and publications.

Publications[edit]

Butterfly Conservation Society of Sri Lanka (BCSSL) is involved in many publications on Butterfly fauna of Sri Lanka. Most recognized publications are,

  • "A Pocket Guide to the Butterflies of Sri Lanka - 1st edition"[3][4]
  • "A Pocket Guide to the Butterflies of Sri Lanka - 2nd Edition"[2][5][6].

BCSSL has also contributed to the other publications such as "A Field Guide to the Butterflies of Sri Lanka", "Butterfly Fauna of Sri Lanka" and much more.[1][7]

BCSSL also maintains http://slbutterflies.com [2], a website to view information and latest updates of butterfly fauna of Sri Lanka. It consists of pictures of 247 butterfly species found in Sri Lanka, their larval stages, food plants, distribution maps, etc.

BCSSL publishes its own newsletter 'Krumithuru' (කෘමිතුරු) [2]which mainly focuses on the insect world. It contains articles ranging from scientific writing about butterflies to insect news from Sri Lanka and around the world.

BCSSL organizes many events throughout the year[8]. The main activities and events are:
