Byron L. Warnken, J.D, was a professor of law at the University of Baltimore school of Law, with expertise in constitutional, criminal law as well as legal proceedings..[1][2] After a brief stint as a tax lawyer, Warnken became a full-time law school professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law.[1] He taught Criminal Law, Constitutional Criminal Procedure, Legal Research and Writing, Issues in Law Enforcement and Moot Court over the next 40 years.[3] He also was as strong advocate at recruiting law students to the University of Baltimore School of Law[3] Within his practice of law he handled appeals, law enforcement representation matters, and post verdict criminal matters.[4]

At the time of his retirement, the University of Baltimore School of Law named its Moot Courtroom the Byron L. Warnken Moot Courtroom.[5]

Early life[edit]

Before Warnken started his life within academics surrounding law, he obtained his high school diploma at the McDonogh high school making him the first male individual within his family to successfully obtain a high school diploma.[6] He obtain a bachelor's degree from the Johns Hopkins University [6]in English in the late 60's.[3] Post Johns Hopkins he started selling cookware where he met his wife Bonnie Angevine.[3] He was later drafted into the U.S Army where he went through a process of training in order to be an infantrymen at Fort bragg, North Carolina.[3] He was sent for active duty as a typist for command within Wurkzburg, Germany.[3] After his service he later attended Law school at the University of Baltimore where he finished his studies and obtained his law degree with honors. It was after obtaining his law degree he began practicing law in Washington as a tax lawyer before moving back to Baltimore where he started his teaching career.[3]

Life's work[edit]

Byron was the founder of his law firm Warnken, LLC, which focuses on a range of proceedings such as criminal litigation, personal injury, law enforcement.[6] Outside of his university career Warnken had a successful career in law and consultation.[6] With his career, Warnken testified in front of the US Congress as an expert, as well as, sharing expertise in various legal matters, while taking part in over a thousand television interviews and appearances.[6] Warnken was council to hundreds of court appeals locally, statewide and nationwide with the US Supreme court.[4] Warnken was also avidly involved with he University of Baltimore's Law school programs.[3] He was the director of the University's EXPLOR program that seeks to get first year law students legal experience within the legal system.[3] More than 2,500 students went through the program.[3] In addition to being involved with the EXPLOR program, Warnken, was avidly involved within the University's Moot Court program at which he was faculty advisor that would mentor the schools advocacy teams for regional debates with other law schools.[3] In 2018 the University named the law schools Moot Court room after Warnken to commemorate and honor his dedication to the University's faculty of law and to his students.[3]

Media Appearances[edit]

Professor Byron L. Warnken made numerous media appearances from the early 1980's through the time of his retirement in 2018. He appeared on Larry King Live, CNN's Crossfire, C-Span, and ABC News.[7] In addition, he was a regular commentator for Baltimore's local TV stations and made more than 1500 appearances in the media.[8] He commented on high profile cases such as Freddie Gray[9][10], George Huguely[11], and Shiela Dixon's fall from grace[12]

Warnken, LLC[edit]

Byron Warnken along with his firm have represented Maryland State Troops for over 20 years and has represented numerous other law enforcement officers in regional and national cases.[4]
