House Medici (Historical Fan Fiction, Work In Progress)
House Medici was one of the great houses of Firenze [peacock prose], rising to prominence in the late tenth century (C.E.). House Medici was founded by the late Rodrigo de Medici, a Tuscan merchant, raised and educated in Genoa. Rodrigo was born to a very poor family that was barely able to afford to feed him and his younger brother and sister, let alone themselves. Rodrigo started working ever since he was able to walk and talk, aiding shop owners and delivering packages for merchants; he was able to help sustain his family’s meager lifestyle. At the age of ten, a merchant took Rodrigo under his wing and made him his apprentice. Rodrigo learned how to read and write, he learned mathematics and how to deal with financial problems, Rodrigo learned proper education, and eventually about government systems and global news.
Rodrigo left his family, in 1029 C.E., at the age of sixteen and set out to travel to the city of Firenze, in the Holy Roman Empire. There in Firenze, Rodrigo hoped to be able to start a trading company, leave behind his past of being a squatter, and the threat of war (as the Holy Roman Emperor had threatened to sack the city of Genoa due to the growing border disputes between Genoa and its desire to control Milan). Rodrigo decided to travel with a caravan that was traveling towards the Papal State, as it was the only caravan that was traveling south into Italy that desired payment from Rodrigo. The journey to Firenze was a long one, a three-week journey on foot through the Tuscan countryside, long open plains that were infested with bandits. To Rodrigo's surprise, he arrived alive and safe even though the caravan he traveled with was ambushed three times and had lost half of its members. The first thing Rodrigo did when he arrived in Firenze was buy three trade caravans and begin the administration of his new enterprise, Medici's Tuscan Trade Company. Medici, spending all the money he had brought with him from Genoa on his trading company, had no home, so he slept on the floor in the back of his small shop. Medici was able to accumulate enough caravans and trading outposts over the course of a decade that he was able to afford a large villa and was eventually granted the right of nobility by the ruling family in Firenze. Rodrigo, in order to assert his noble prerogative, married into one of the great families of Firenze. Soon after, in 1039 C.E., he destroyed three of his competitor's trading outposts in Tuscany and drove his competitor into bankruptcy in order for the Medicis to become one of the five great houses of Firenze.
Giovanni de Medici was born in October of the same year, becoming the first Medici to be born into nobility, while Cosimo was born in September of the next year. While Rodrigo was building up the Medici's power and influence in Firenze and Tuscany, Giovanni and Cosimo were battling over who would rule it all. Giovanni had bullied Cosimo ever since childhood. Giovanni always was better at solving problems through words, while Cosimo would find a way to solve problems financially, and what money couldn't do, fighting made up for. Giovanni hated the savage ways his brother used to deal with problems; Giovanni thought that Cosimo was a disgrace to the Medici family, and Cosimo envied his brother’s right to inheritance.
