Cade Garrett Kuehler (born May 24, 2002) is an American professional baseball pitcher in the Atlanta Braves organization.
Career[edit]
Kuehler was born on May 24, 2002, in Matthews, North Carolina. He attended Cuthbertson High School in Waxhall, where he played baseball.[1] He had a 9–0 record with a 0.92 ERA, had 85 strikeouts and batted .364.[2] He was named all-conference and team MVP in 2019, and was honored with the Male Performance of the Year in 2020 after throwing a no-hitter in the first game of the season. As a Canes National travel ball pitcher, he posted an 8-1 record as a starter with an additional three saves in relief, recording a 0.82 ERA and helping earn the Canes a Perfect Games World Series title and a No.1 national ranking.[3]
Kuehler was recruited by both East Tennessee State University and Campbell University. He committed to the Campbell Fighting Camels before 2018 and enrolled in 2020.[4][5]
As a freshman at Campbell in 2021, Kuehler made 16 appearances and 8 starts on the mound in which he went 5-2 with a 3.89 ERA and 41 strikeouts over 44 innings.[3] That year, he played collegiate summer baseball with the Ocean State Waves.[6] As a sophomore in 2022, Kuehler racked up a program record 111 strikeouts in 84 innings with an ERA of 4.07. He was ranked 14th in the nation in hits allowed per nine innings at 6.11. Named second-team all Big South and Big South All-tournament Team. Struck out 10 and walked only two in each of his last four starts against Ohio State, ECU, Gardner-Webb, and number one nationally ranked, Tennessee.[3]
In 2022, Kuehler was the first Campbell University baseball player to be selected for the Team USA Collegiate Baseball Team and represented Team USA along with his 25 teammates at the 2022 Honkbalweek in Haarlem, Netherlands where they claimed the bronze medal by defeating Japan, 5-1.[5][7]
Additional notable accomplishments in 2022[8]: Kuehler was named to the Big South Presidential Honor Roll; Made 16 appearances and 15 starts with a 4-6 record and 4.07 ERA; Struck out a program-record 111 batters; Ranked 14th in the nation in hits allowed per nine at 6.11; Big South’s lowest opposing batting average at .184; Struck-out a season-high 12 across 6.2 scoreless innings and allowing only one hit in a no-decision against Army on 3/5; Only relief appearance was on May 28, 2022 against CSU after throwing 103 pitches the previous day escaping a bases-loaded jam with a 1-2-3 double play[9] to preserve a 3-2 lead over CSU in the Big South championship game.
Professional career[edit]
Prior to the 2023 Major League Baseball draft, MLB.com ranked Kuehler the 59th best prospect.[10] He was selected with the 70th overall pick by the Atlanta Braves,[10][11] and signed with the team for $1.045 million.[12] He debuted with the Augusta GreenJackets on August 31, 2023, pitching 2 1⁄3 scoreless innings.[13]

Kuehler should feel good about the strides he has made since he exited high school with offers from just two colleges: East Tennessee State and Campbell University. His decision to go with the latter institution introduced him to head coach Justin Haire and a program that has recently produced MLB players Zach Neto and Cedric Mullins.

Campbell’s pitching staff is plenty talented in its own right. Kuehler spent the summer with USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team (another program first) and this season has moved to the front of the rotation to replace Thomas Harrington, who last year was drafted No. 36 overall. He can run his fastball into the upper 90s and pairs it with a powerful slider. He has a full arsenal, however, throwing as many as four offspeed pitches to keep hitters off balance. He’s 7-0, 2.60 with 73 strikeouts and 17 walks in 52 innings. ... Campbell has come a long way in the last 16 years—even in the last six years since Kuehler was being recruited. He committed before the program’s run of four straight regionals began in 2018 and said by the time he got to campus in the fall of 2020 the vibe inside the program had already changed from one of possibility to one of expectation.
