The Caffè Chiappa or Pasticceria Chiappa was one of Brescia, Italy's oldest pastry shops, delicatessens and coffeehouses,,[1] thanks to Francesco Filippini it became the most important meeting place for intellectuals and artists in Italy.[2]
History[edit]
Beginnings[edit]
Founded by veteran Carlo Chiappa in 1853, the Caffè was an important place for socialization and the meeting of the Italian artist, or the upper-class citizens of Brescia, and it was a haunt for intellectuals, artists, musicians, academics, writers and poet.
Already in 1866, due to family economic problems, Francesco Filippini worked as an apprentice at the Chiappa pastry shop, which a few years later would become the meeting place for many Brescian artists. The passion for drawing matured precisely in that period, as the memory of the charcoal portraits in which he depicted his employers testifies.
The pastry shop continued to reap awards, including a significant one at the 1968 Paris Exposition for a chocolate specialty.
