Caia Lynn Koopman (born 19 March 1968) is an American artist and one of the rising members of the "Lowbrow" or pop surrealism art movement. Koopman is a contemporary of Mark Ryden, Joe Sorren, Todd Schorr and the Clayton Brothers.

Biography[edit]

Caia Lynn Koopman was born on 18 March 1968 at Livermore, California. She is the daughter of Ron Koopman, Ph.D., a nuclear physicist, and Sue Koopman, a computer scientist. She has a sister, Marni Koopman, Ph.D., an environmental scientist.[1] Koopman graduated from the University of California, Santa Cruz with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree.

Commercial art[edit]

Koopman has produced commercial artwork for Oakley, Rossignol, K2 Sports, Morrow Snowboards, and Hyperlite Wakeboards with graphics for snowboards, skateboards and wakeboards.[2] Gelaskins are skins for customization for a person's cell phone, laptop or tablets.[3]

Caia was hired as house designer for Fly Girls and Hot Lava.[4]

In 1997, Koopman appeared in an MTV special episode of MTV Sports titled Athletes & Art.[5][6]

Philanthropy[edit]

Bird flew. Aves: A Celebration of Birds in Art. Catharsis by Caia Koopman, limited-edition print. Aves: A Celebration of Birds in Art was a one day only show in honor of National Bird Day (5 January 2009). Artists donated proceeds to Born Free USA.[7]

Sea No Evil 2010 was held on 31 July 2010. The charity show and silent art auction with proceeds to benefit the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society. The event is held in Riverside, California at the Riverside Municipal Auditorium. The auction featured work by Shepard Fairey, Clayton Brothers, Dave Kinsey, Gary Baseman, Mark Dean Veca, Audrey Kawasaki, Caia Koopman, Amy Sol, Joe Ledbetter, Lola, Travis Louie, Mari Inukai, Kozyndan, Travis Lampe, Kev Munday, Katy Betz, Cathie Bleck, Frieda Gossett, and Ana Bagayan. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is known for the popular television series Whale Wars.[8]

Koopman continues to work with PangeaSeed as they are doing all they can to save the Oceans with awareness raising murals and prints. She has completed two prints with them.
