Caio de Arruda Miranda (São Paulo, December 5, 1986), better known as Caio Coppolla, is a Brazilian political commentator, musician and law graduate[1]. He is known for having conservative views and for being aligned with Jair Bolsonaro's positions.

Musical career[edit]

Caio Coppolla led the musical group Mirandous, between 2014 and 2016, in which he was a singer, composer and guitarist. During his brief career in music, he adopted the surname "Coppolla", from his Italian-Brazilian mother. Strongly inspired by English rock from the 2000s, the band was described as "Brazilian Oasis" by UOL Música. The other members of the band were bassist Rodrigo Moura and drummer Ique Schmitt.[2][3][4]In 2020, after becoming a notorious and controversial conservative political commentator, Coppola's musical past went viral on social media, in the context of criticism of his positions aligned with the Jair Bolsonaro government[5][6][7]

Political Commentator[edit]

After ending his musical career, Caio Coppola was hired by Jovem Pan, where he worked until 2019. Later, he was hired by CNN Brasil, where he was part of the group O Grande Debate in the newspaper Expresso CNN and Liberdade de Opinião, within the newspaper Visão CNN and was fired after reshuffling the channel's programs. He was hired again by Jovem Pan, until he was fired again, shortly after the election of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in 2022.[8][9] According to Ricardo Feltrin, the reasons for Coppola's dismissal include his low frequency on the program, request for vacation during the election period and a "diva" attitude..[10] However, in an interview with Folha de São Paulo, Coppola alleged that Jovem Pan practiced self-censorship when redefining its editorial line and praised the good ratings of his program, which exceeded the one million views mark.[11] Coppolla received one of the highest salaries at the network.[12]

During his period at CNN Brasil, he defended the impeachment of Alexandre de Moraes and defined him as the "executioner of freedom of expression". In addition, he collected signatures for a petition in favor of impeachment, through social media. As a result, legal union organizations filed a note of repudiation against the attempt to intimidate the Federal Supreme Court.[13]

He returned to CNN Brasil in 2023 to be one of the members of the program O Grande Debate (The Great Debate).
