Cal Simmons is the founder of Five Star Alliance, Luxury Hotelist, and Travel Onion. Simmons is currently head of the first D.C. chapter of TIGER 21, a club for angel investors, and serves as an Advisor of Revinate, Inc.[1][2]
Early life and education
Simmons began his schooling in the Journalism School at Kansas University. He was recruited as a tennis player, playing 1st singles and doubles throughout his career. He quickly realized he wanted to be an entrepreneur and not a journalist. To date, Simmons has created about a dozen companies, and has invested in about 50.[3]
His first job out of school was delivering the Evening Star.[3]
Career
Simmons is an active early-stage investor with a focus on the travel industry. He is the founder of Five Star Alliance, Luxury Hotelist, and Travel Onion.[4] Simmons facilitates two Washington, D.C. groups for Tiger 21, a learning company for high net worth individuals.[5][6]
Simmons began his entrepreneurial career by founding Cal Simmons Travel in 1976.[3][5] Simmons went on to launch 9 other travel agencies, and eventually sold the business.[5] He served as Director of VIPdesk.com, Inc, and Outtask, LLC, and currently serves as the Director of Integrity Brands, LLC.[1] Simmons has served on advisory boards for several airlines, hotel companies, and a rental car agency.[4][3]
In 2002, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Virginia Tourism Corporation by the Governor of Virginia.[7]
In 2004, Simmons co-founded Five Star Alliance (FSA), an online travel agency for luxury hotels, and served as its Chairman & Partner.[1]
In 2011, he launched a city-by-city collection of blogs featuring the world's best hotels called Simmons Hotel Guides. In the same year, Simmons published TravelOnion.com, which provides the best deals in one place for travel.[3][4]
Published works
In 2001 Simmons co-authored the investment guide, "Every Business Needs an Angel",[8][9] which was published by Random House.[3]
The next year, Simmons published his first online travel guide, The Informed Traveler.[3]
