Calardis Blanc is a white wine variety breed from Germany. It was developed by the Julius Kühn-Instituts, Institut für Rebenzüchtung Geilweilerhof. The variety name is derived from the historic latin naming of Geilweilerhof..[1].

Characteristics[edit]

The wines from this grape variety are characterized by a tangy, ripe acidity and have a finesse-rich aroma with a delicate, finely spicy bouquet[2].

The time of budding and harvest are comparable to that of Riesling. It has an upright growth and is characterized by a low level of side shoots. The sizes of grapes and berries also correspond to those of Riesling[2][3]

Calardis Blanc has a high resistance against downy mildew, which is mediated by a combination of resistance factors from both parents[4]. Medium to high resistance is given to powdery mildew and botrytis. As a result, up to 80% of fungicides can be saved[2].

Plant variety protection was granted in January 2018[5] and addition to the German list of varieties took place in March 2020. This means that Calardis Blanc can be marketed as a quality wine in Germany[6]

Pedigree[edit]

Cross parants are the variety Calardis Musqué (Bacchus x Seyval Blanc) and Seyve Villard 39-639.[4]

Production[edit]

As of January 2020, the total area under cultivation in Rhineland-Palatinate was 3.8 hectares.
