Calvin Woods (born April 3, 1999), known professionally as Calboy (/ˈkælbɔɪ/), is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur. He is the chief executive officer of the imprint Paper Gang Music.[1][2][3][4]

Raised in Calumet City, Illinois, Woods developed a passion for hip hop. After coining his stage name Calboy from "Calumet City" and producing records in his home studio, 17-year old Calvin began a solo career as a rapper, debuting his mixtape The Chosen One in early 2017. The LP garnered local praise in the Chicago rap scene. Calboy then independently released two additional mixtapes, Anxiety and Calboy The Wild Boy, the latter in 2018. Calboy's debut single "Envy Me" peaked at #41 on the Billboard Top 100 and at #16 on Billboard's Hot Rap Songs.[5][6][7][8]

Early life[edit]

Calboy was born Calvin Woods in South Side, Chicago, but later relocated to Calumet City, Illinois.[9] As one of five children raised by a single mother, Woods turned to music to channel the frustrations of growing up below the poverty level; amid the guns, gangs, and drugs which plagued his South Chicago community. Calboy witnessed two of his best friends die, one of a drug overdose and the other to gun violence.[3] His family migrated between small homes to small apartments.

Before pursing a rap career, Woods had great interest in visual art, "I was painting and drawing before I was rapping. I was drawing everything from anime to Chibi characters. I just started to get into the paints. I do a lot of that in my spare time. Whenever I got free time, I try to get some canvases done." He would sketch and paint with acrylics. [10][11]

Wood taught himself to record and started a rap group consisting of neighborhood friends called K.O.B. “Music relieved a lot of stress for me and let me get the stress out before I exploded” .[12] By the age of 14, Calboy began producing his own content, utilizing cracked music programs and youtube tutorials.[13]

Eight years later, 19-year old Calboy has released three major mixtapes and one debut single,"Envy Me" he also partnered with Polo Grounds Music, RCA Records and currently represents his imprint Paper Gang Music, of which he is the only flagship artist.[14]

After becoming musically inspired by Tupac, Michael Jackson, Lil Wayne, and The All-American Rejects, Woods honed on the development of his musical intelligence. He studied elements such as harmonies, melodies, and an abundance of vocal techniques.[15] He was genuinely vested in the history of music and legendary musicians alike, of whom he used as mentors and guides in his creative processes. By age 17, rap became his panacea. Woods's ability to intercalate narratives and properly illustrate stories into his musical pieces initiated a then, well deserved, but unexpected phenomenon.[16] He figured he'd be able to cultivate a formidable rap career, but his debut mixtape, The Chosen One removed all uncertainty, from both himself and music critics. Prior to and following his first mixtape publication, Woods released all of his music using the sobriquet Calboy, on various online music platforms and later, streaming services.[17]

Calboy released his second mixtape, Anxiety, on December 17, 2017 to exceptional reviews. Atlanta native, Lil Duke, appeared on the track "Athletes" becoming one of the first songs released with a prominent rap artist. It was through this release that he established his position on mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as debilitating epidemics such as drug addiction and abuse.[18][19][20] [21]

2018 - Present: Calboy The Wild Boy, Envy Me[edit]

On June 18, 2018 Calboy released Calboy The Wild Boy, which proved to be the greatest release of his mixtape trio. He released his debut single the same year, taking the show business by storm. The single garnered 50,000,000 views on Youtube alone, and sparked widespread acclaim which would follow Calboy for the remainder of his career, receiving high praise from rap artists such as Chance the Rapper, Rae Sremmurd, and Lil Durk.[22]

Charles Holmes of Rolling Stone, regarded Envy Me as "One of the most successful rap records in the country." Needless to say, it was nothing short of that. The single secured two spots on the Soundcloud Top 50 and sparked a dance that took social media aficionados by storm. Ironically, two months before the single was dropped, Cody Mack at Whats The Word TV stated "This kid is going to be a force to be reckoned with, he has the talent, the drive and the thirst for knowledge. I know he is working on his next project, All he needs is a one smash hit and he's gone!"[23][24]

Calboy's single landed him on stages worldwide, performing at a Lyrical Lemonade concert and opening for Recording Industry Association of America Gold artist, Lil Baby.

He has hinted at future projects for 2019, revealing plans with Billboard of a compilation coming this upcoming April.[25] On January 27, 2019 Calboy posted a picture of him and Chance the Rapper on twitter, saying the two would be soon releasing a song.

Musical style[edit]

Woods has stated in interviews with XXL and Billboard that Tupac Shakur, Michael Jackson, Chance The Rapper, Lupe Fiasco, Chief Keef, Lil Wayne, G Herbo, The All American Rejects and 50 Cent have influenced him.[28]

Woods's has been credited for having "melodic delivery" and "prolific storytelling ability". His music generally contains piano-inspired melodies and pain induced influences. Woods's lyrical content consists of references to the inner city events taking place in his hometown Chicago, but relates to hip-hop fanatics and everyday individuals worldwide. He creates auditory images of combating mental troubles, success with his music career, and reflections of his upbringing. Alphonse Pierre at Pitchfork has described Woods's music as "the story of Chicago's youth."[29]

Personal life[edit]

Woods resides in his hometown, Chicago, Illinois. Alongside his musical career, he has taken the position to be a positive force for young men and women globally. In 2019, Woods and philanthropist Chance the Rapper made an appearance at Chicago's Becoming A Man: MLK UNITY DAY, whose mission is "Youth guidance creates and implements school-based programs that enable children to overcome obstacles, focus on their education and, ultimately, to succeed in school and in life."[30]

Having already overcome a battle with depression and anxiety, Woods seeks to empower others with the knowledge and wisdom needed to become the most successful individuals of their generation.[31]
