Calvin Woods (born April 3, 1999), known professionally as Calboy (/ˈkælbɔɪ/), is an American rapper, songwriter, record producer, and entrepreneur. He is the chief executive officer of the imprint Paper Gang Music.[1][2][3]

Raised in Calumet City, Illinois, Woods developed a passion for hip hop. After coining his stage name Calboy from "Calumet City" and producing records in his home studio, 17-year-old Calvin began a solo career as a rapper, debuting his mixtape The Chosen One in early 2017. The LP garnered local praise in the Chicago rap scene. Calboy then independently released two additional mixtapes, Anxiety and Calboy the Wild Boy, the latter in 2018. Calboy's debut single "Envy Me" peaked at number 41 on the Billboard Hot 100 and at number 16 on Billboard's Hot Rap Songs.[4][5][6][7]

Early life[edit | edit source]

Calboy was born Calvin Woods in South Side, Chicago, but later relocated to Calumet City, Illinois.[8] As one of five children raised by a single mother, Woods turned to music to channel the frustrations of growing up below the poverty level. Calboy witnessed two of his best friends die, one of a drug overdose and the other to gun violence.[2] His family migrated between small homes to small apartments.

Before pursing a rap career, Woods had great interest in visual art. "I was painting and drawing before I was rapping. I was drawing everything from anime to Chibi characters. I just started to get into the paints. I do a lot of that in my spare time. Whenever I got free time, I try to get some canvases done." He would sketch and paint with acrylics.[9][10]

Wood taught himself to record and started a rap group consisting of neighborhood friends called K.O.B. He later said in an interview that "Music relieved a lot of stress for me and let me get the stress out before I exploded."[11] By the age of 14, Calboy began producing his own content, utilizing cracked music programs and YouTube tutorials.[12]

By the age of 19, Calboy has released three major mixtapes and one debut single, "Envy Me". He has also partnered with Polo Grounds Music, RCA Records and currently represents his imprint Paper Gang Music, of which he is the flagship artist.[13]

Career[edit | edit source]

2016–2017: The Chosen One and Anxiety[edit | edit source]

After becoming musically inspired by Tupac, Michael Jackson, Lil Wayne, and The All-American Rejects, Woods began studying harmonies, melodies, and vocal techniques,[14] as well as learning about music history and famous musicians.[15] His debut mixtape, The Chosen One, was released to positive reviews. Prior to and following The Chosen One, Woods released all of his music using the sobriquet Calboy, on various online music platforms and later, streaming services.[16]

Calboy released his second mixtape, Anxiety, on December 17, 2017 to positive reviews. Atlanta native Lil Duke appeared on the track "Athletes", becoming one of Calboy's first songs released with a prominent rap artist. The song contained lyrics about mental disorders such as anxiety and depression, as well as drug addiction and abuse.[17][18][19]

On June 18, 2018 Calboy released Calboy the Wild Boy, the most successful of his mixtape trio. He also released his debut single the same year, which achieved 50 million views on YouTube, and was praised by rap artists such as Chance the Rapper, Rae Sremmurd, and Lil Durk.[20]

Charles Holmes of Rolling Stone, regarded "Envy Me" as "One of the most successful rap records in the country". The song achieved two spots on the SoundCloud Top 50 and sparked a dance. Two months before the song was released, Cody Mack of Whats the Word TV stated: "This kid is going to be a force to be reckoned with, he has the talent, the drive and the thirst for knowledge. I know he is working on his next project, All he needs is a one smash hit and he's gone!"[21][22]

Calboy later performed at a Lyrical Lemonade concert and opened for rapper Lil Baby.[23]

He has hinted at future projects for 2019, revealing plans with Billboard of a compilation to be released in April 2019.[24] On January 27, 2019, Calboy posted a picture of him and Chance the Rapper on Twitter, saying the two would be soon releasing a song.

Woods has stated in interviews with XXL and Billboard that Tupac Shakur, Michael Jackson, Chance The Rapper, Lupe Fiasco, Chief Keef, Lil Wayne, G Herbo, The All American Rejects and 50 Cent have influenced him.[27]

Woods has been credited for having "melodic delivery" and "prolific storytelling ability". His music generally contains piano-inspired melodies and lyrical content that refers to events that took place in his hometown Chicago. Alphonse Pierre of Pitchfork described Woods's music as "the story of Chicago's youth."[28]
