Calling All Cowboys

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Calling All Cowboys is a radio music show and streaming playlist created and hosted by Charles Engel aka Chuckaroo the Buckaroo. The show is broadcast over the radio Wednesdays at 6PM and Sundays at 4PM (Pacific time), and through the "Listen Live" link on KPOV-FM in Bend, Oregon. Calling All Cowboys preserves original Western Americana music, especially trail songs, yodeling, western swing, cowboy poetry and tall tales.

The Washington Post quotes the impact of community radio and its programming, including the "Calling All Cowboys" program : “This will give a voice to the community,” [1]

Central Oregon's primary newspaper, the Bend Bulletin, quotes one musician "it's always worthwhile to support the formats" (Calling All Cowboys) "that keep this kind of music going.” [2]

American Cowboy says "We gave cowboy music radio host Charley Engel the daunting task of choosing the Top 20 core cowboy songs of the last 20 years, and he didn't disappoint" [3]

The program is broadcast over several public radio stations in the United States, and is streamed live over the internet. The show has been in continuous broadcast since 2005.

Format[edit]

Each show opens with an audio excerpt of the old Gene Autry radio program, with Cowboy Autry frantically urging "This is Gene Autry! CALLING ALL COWBOYS"..."CALLING ALL COWBOYS..." followed by Charles Engel's verbal introduction of the show's theme.

The CAC theme song, "Grand Entry," was written and performed by Cowboy John Grant. The music beds in the syndicated versions are provided by the late Dave Bourne.

Music is a main feature of the program; the show is a significant outlet to preserve genuine cowboy music and western music. The music is often obscure and is rarely played on mainstream radio stations. Often the music has not been aired in decades.

Current cowboy musicians and their recordings are included among the historic cowboy music recordings.

Calling All Cowboys, as a syndicated program, is structured to run as either a 1-hour show or a 2-hour show. Breaks with music beds are placed at appox. 20 and 40 minutes past the hour for local insertions. Calling All Cowboys is free and open content and can be rebroadcast.[citation needed]
