Roseate sonnet
The roseate sonnet is a form of sonnet introduced by Koshy AV, a South Indian poet and writer in December 2012.[1][2]
Origin
Roseate sonnet derives its name from Rose. Koshy AV chose "Rose" because it is a very famous flower and considered a fine example of beauty in literature. The idea of introducing this form came to his mind on seeing the "facebook profile of his friend Gopali C Ghosh."[1]
Format
Roseate sonnet, like other sonnets, consists of fourteen lines. Generally, it contains two quatrains, followed by a couplet and then the third quatrain. The most important feature of this form is the third quatrain. The first line of the third quatrain begins with 'R', the second line with 'O', third line with 'S' and the fourth line with 'E' thus writing "ROSE" in acrostic manner. Fixed syllable count, rhythm and rhyme are not required; the poet may use them if they wish, and may also change the line patterns described above.[1][2]
History
Roseate Sonnet was introduced by Koshy AV in December 2012, and he also wrote the first one. The second Roseate Sonnet was written by Sreepriya Balakrishnan, both of them from South India. Many Roseate Sonnets have been written since then. Important poets who have experimented with the form include Koshy AV, Sreepriya Balakrishnan, Ananya Chatterjee, Nazim ZarSinner and Sunila Kamal.[1][3] [4] Koshy AV has also published "Roseate Sonnet Anthology".[5]
Examples
You Fell And Rose
You used to glow with an inner fire
Ornate profile, a painting or statue
Umber skin that drove mad with desire
Far from the crowd, for hours you would woo –Endearingly curious, fearing & hating
Love and its lure, lust and its tunes
Lest, if done, it proved to your undoing…
After the nights became bereft of runesNasturtium, you blossomed and bloomed
Donned your conquest, a new country ruled
Rare, such near-perfection, two souls almost meetingOn a voyage that had in opposite directions been heading
Slowly drowning now in a becalmed sea
Entreating each other: Can this, love, ever be?!
— Koshy AV
Stand By Him
He does not know why the world is unkind,
He's lost somewhere and being left behind,
To his happiness, everyone turns blind;
Complex thoughts arise in his immature mind.
He speaks with discontinuous speech,At comprehension's threshold which can't reach;
His eyes trying to show a hidden beseech,
A cry: "Help! My Life Is Suffering Breach."
Asks: Is there any room in world for him?Will you stand by to help him show his vim?
Road to reach Utopian World is long,Oust his mental weakness to make him strong
So, provide him with his right, don't do wrong,
Ecstasy will spread, he'll sing happy song!
— Nazim ZarSinner
