Cameron Woodhead
Cameron Woodhead is a Melbourne-based Australian journalist and critic who is best known for being senior theatre critic at The Age.
Career[edit]
Woodhead began writing book reviews for The Age and The Australian at the age of eighteen. In 2004, he became senior theatre critic at The Age, a role he retains to this day.[1]
Woodhead has sometimes been the subject of controversy. Theatre director Julian Meyrick accused him of being driven by 'reactions rather than responses' after he wrote a negative review of one of his plays.[2] He was subsequently defended by Peter Craven in The Sydney Morning Herald.[3] The poet and playwright Alison Croggon wrote that 'if we didn't have a Cameron Woodhead to hate, we'd have to invent him,' and described him mockingly as among the 'grave illuminati' of Melbourne theatre.[4][5]
As literary critic, he has has contributed to magazines such as the Sydney Review of Books, Crikey, Meanjin and The Monthly.[6][7][8] He also writes a weekly books column and has co-hosted ABC Local.[9][10]
