The Canadian Psychiatric Association (C.P.A.) was founded in 1951, it is a national voluntary professional association and the main professional organization of psychiatrists and trainee psychiatrists in Canada.
History[edit]
After 4 years of informal discussion by a group of dedicated psychiatrists, the C.P.A. was formally incorporated on June 1, 1951. It consisted of three officers, a Board of Directors made up of provincial representatives and 143 charter members that held annual meetings. The publication of a Bulletin in the first year was followed in 1955 by that of the C.P.A. Journal. C.P.A. affiliations with the Canadian Medical Association and provincial psychiatric societies consolidated the C.P.A. considerably. By its seventh anniversary, the C.P.A. had 500 members, and its status placed it among the top specialist medical associations in Canada.
