Canary Islands Championship
Template:Infobox football competition
The Canary Islands Championship (in Spanish Campeonato Regional de Canarias) was a regional association football competition for clubs in the Canary Islands, Spain. The competition determined the regional champion of the archipelago and, during much of its history, was connected with qualification for the Spanish Championship.[1][2]
The competition originated in inter-island matches between clubs from Tenerife and Gran Canaria. RSSSF records championships in 1911–12 and 1912–13, but marks both as unofficial. The first championship generally recognised as official was the 1913–14 edition, won by Sporting Club Tenerife, the club now known as CD Tenerife.[1][3]
The championship was played intermittently. Its organisation was formalised with the creation of the Federación Canaria de Fútbol, whose first competitive season was 1926–27. In 1930 the federation was divided into the Federación de Las Palmas and the Federación Tinerfeña, and the regional championship subsequently involved the champions or representatives of the two sectors.[2][1]
The competition was not held continuously during the Spanish Civil War and the post-war period. After the 1948–49 championship, there was a long interruption before the competition returned in 1971–72. The final recorded edition was held in 1976–77, when Real Unión Tenerife were champions.[4][2]
History
Early years
The earliest inter-island championships were contested by representative clubs from Tenerife and Gran Canaria. RSSSF lists Sporting Victoria as the winner in both 1911–12 and 1912–13, but identifies these two editions as unofficial.[1][5]
The first officially recognised championship was held in 1913–14. Sporting Club Tenerife defeated Marino FC 1–0 in the final played in Santa Cruz de Tenerife on 2 May 1914.[1][6]
Sporting Club Tenerife successfully defended the title in 1914–15 and 1915–16, defeating Marino FC 4–0 and Porteño CF 2–0 respectively.[1][7]
The 1916–17 championship was won by Marino FC after a 3–0 victory over Sporting Club Tenerife. RSSSF marks this edition as unofficial. The competition was then interrupted, with no championship in 1917–18, before CD Gran Canaria defeated Sporting Club Tenerife 2–1 in the 1918–19 final.[1][5]
No championship was held from 1919–20 through 1921–22. The competition returned in 1922–23, when Marino FC defeated CD Tenerife 2–0 in the final. Santa Catalina CF won the following championship, defeating CD Tenerife 1–0 in 1923–24.[1][5]
Establishment of the regional federation
The Federación Canaria de Fútbol was established in the 1920s and organised its first competitions in the 1926–27 season. The federation subsequently provided a formal structure for football in the Canary Islands, while the regional championship became closely associated with the island sectors of Tenerife and Las Palmas.[2][3]
Real Club Victoria won the 1926–27 championship. The club finished first in the combined Tenerife–Las Palmas competition, ahead of Iberia Tenerife and Gran Canaria.[1][8]
Real Club Victoria also won the 1927–28 championship. Marino FC won in 1928–29, while Real Club Victoria returned to the top in 1929–30.[1][5]
In 1930 the regional federation was divided into two provincial federations, one based in Las Palmas and the other in Tenerife. This change affected the organisation of the championship, with separate island or provincial competitions preceding the regional phase in a number of seasons.[2][3]
1930s
Real Unión Tenerife won the 1930–31 championship according to the historical record compiled by RSSSF. CD Tenerife won in 1931–32, while Real Club Victoria won in 1932–33.[1][5]
CD Tenerife won the 1933–34 and 1934–35 championships, while Real Unión Tenerife won in 1935–36.[1][5]
The championship was not played in 1936–37 or 1937–38. A combined Tenerife side won the 1938–39 regional championship, with a combined Las Palmas side as its opponent.[1][5]
The 1939–40 championship was not played.[1][5]
1940s
A combined Las Palmas side won the 1940–41 championship, after which club-based regional finals returned. Real Club Victoria defeated Real Unión Tenerife in the 1941–42 final, while Marino FC defeated CD Iberia in 1942–43.[1][5]
Real Club Victoria won the 1943–44 championship against CD Price. Marino FC then won the championship in 1944–45 and 1945–46, defeating CD Iberia and CD Tenerife respectively.[1][5]
Real Club Victoria won the 1946–47 championship against Real Hespérides. Marino FC defeated Real Hespérides in 1947–48, while Real Club Victoria again defeated Real Hespérides in 1948–49.[1][5]
The 1948–49 championship was the last edition before a prolonged interruption. Real Club Victoria's official club history also records the club as regional champion in 1949, and states that the club won the regional title during the same year in which it participated in the creation of UD Las Palmas.[9]
Final period
The regional championship was not held during the 1950s and 1960s. The competition returned in 1971–72, when Hespérides FC won the title ahead of UD Orotava.[5][10]
There was no championship in 1972–73. The competition was again absent in 1973–74, before CD Puerto Cruz won the 1974–75 edition against Real Artesano CF.[5][10]
Toscal CF won the 1975–76 championship, with Real Artesano CF as runner-up. The final recorded edition was the 1976–77 championship, won by Real Unión Tenerife against CD Firgas.[5][10]
The regional championship subsequently ceased to be organised in this form as the structure of regional football in the Canary Islands developed around the provincial federations and their league competitions.[2]
List of champions
The following list distinguishes the two early editions identified by RSSSF as unofficial. The record follows the historical championship lists compiled by RSSSF and corroborating Canary Islands football histories.[1][5]

Honours
Real Club Victoria's own historical record lists regional championship titles in 1927, 1930, 1931, 1933, 1942, 1944, 1947 and 1949, giving the club eight titles in its club record.[11]
Historical compilations differ in the way they count early or sector-based championships. RSSSF, for example, separates the early unofficial championships from the later regional championship and gives a different title count for the pre-1936 period.[1] Consequently, title totals should be understood according to the particular historical classification used by the source.
