Capital FM is a Russian radio station broadcasting contemporary hits and chart music. Based in Moscow, it is the capital's first and only English-speaking radio station.

History[edit]

Capital FM was launched as a new project in December 2015, following the rebranding of Moscow FM (the city's former English language radio station since 2012).[1][2] First based in Moscow Media's headquarters near Belorusskaya it moved to a brand new studio in Moscow City's Naberezhnaya Tower in May 2018. It has a see-through layout and live webcams, giving listeners an insight into the studio. The station's frequency also moved from 105.2 to 105.3.[3] English electronic band Morcheeba were among the first artists to visit the station's new location.[4]

Background[edit]

While popular music is the station's main focus, it also broadcasts a morning show on weekdays, a sports segment and a city guide on the latest events in Moscow. There's also an hourly bulletin bringing listeners news updates from Russia and overseas.[5] There are also regular promotions and giveaways for listeners.[6] As well as music fans, Capital FM's audience are both English-speaking visitors, students and expats in Moscow, as well as listeners wanting to improve their English.[7][8] According to estimates, Moscow FM's daily distribution reach is around 3 million listeners.[9]
