Carbon Health is an American healthcare franchise founded by Eren Bali, Tom Berry, Greg Burell, and Caesar Djavaherian.[1][2][3][4] As of August 2021, the company owns and operates 82 full-service clinics in 12 states, along with pop-up clinics that serve as COVID-19 testing sites. Carbon Health provides care to patients using a variety of access points, including clinics, pop-up sites, and virtual care,[5][6] an approach that has been described as omnichannel care.[7][8]

History

Carbon Health was founded in San Francisco in 2015 by Udemy co-founder Eren Bali, engineer Tom Berry, and physician Greg Burell. The product began as a software platform and mobile app for medical records, telehealth, doctor-patient messaging, and scheduling.[9] The team developed the platform by opening a private clinic that saw about 750 patients; at the time, their goal was to build software that would serve a network of independently owned medical practices.[10] Their hypothesis was that improving healthcare technology would make healthcare more accessible.[11] The founders first pitched and discussed this roadmap publicly at TechCrunch Disrupt in 2016.[12]

In 2017, the company announced its first institutional round of venture capital funding totaling $6.5 million.[13] The same year, Eren Bali was introduced to Caesar Djavaherian, an emergency medicine doctor and owner of a chain of urgent care clinics called Direct Urgent Care.[14] Djavaherian had experienced problems with electronic health record (EHR) systems, and he decided to pilot the Carbon Health software in his clinics.[15]

In 2018, Carbon Health and Direct Urgent Care merged, and Caesar Djavaherian became the company's fourth co-founder.[16][17][18][19] Because of this merge, Carbon Health now owned 7 brick-and-mortar clinics, and the company started to pivot toward maintaining its own chain of physical locations.[20]

In 2019, Carbon Health announced a Series B round of $30 million,[21] followed by a Series B extension of $28M in early 2020 to strengthen its initiatives related to the COVID-19 pandemic.[22] Later in 2020, the company announced a $100M round led by Dragoneer Investment Group,[23] and in 2021, a $350M round led by The Blackstone Group.[24][25]

Also in 2021, the company hired Chief Strategy Officer Myoung Cha, former head of strategic initiatives for Apple’s health division. The company also acquired a virtual clinic called Steady Health, which specializes in diabetes care.[26][27][28]

COVID-19 Response

Carbon Health was involved in several initiatives during the COVID-19 pandemic.

In March 2020, Carbon Health partnered with San Francisco-based online pharmacy Alto Pharmacy to provide oral swab home test kits to patients in California. The tests were reportedly distributed under an Emergency Use Authorization by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA);[29][30] however, that same week, the FDA suspended the sales and distribution of home testing kits produced by Carbon Health, among others.[31]

In April 2020 Carbon Health released an open source, HIPAA-compliant repository of COVID-19 clinical data.[32][33] Also in April, Carbon Health collaborated with One Medical, Color, the city of San Francisco, and London Breed to provide accessible COVID-19 testing to essential workers, as part of an initiative called CityTestSF.[34]

In June 2020, the company began to offer a testing and contact tracing program called Covid Ready.[35][36][37]

In August 2020, it collaborated with local healthcare providers in the agricultural town of Lodi, California, to provide free drive-through testing for Lodi residents.[38]

In September 2020, Carbon Health deployed four mobile COVID-19 testing clinics in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Seattle. These were built in partnership with the health technology startup Color.[39][40][41]

In January 2021, the city of Los Angeles began using Carbon Health software to manage the logistics of administering 1.5 million COVID-19 vaccines,[42] particularly at mass vaccination sites including Dodger Stadium.[43][44][45][46][47]

In March 2021, Carbon Health launched a HIPAA-compliant digital proof-of-vaccination card called Health Pass.[48][49][50][51]

Carbon Health partnered with Amazon Studios to provide 12 locations for on-set testing for cast and crew members, later extending the collaboration with Amazon to provide more vaccine access.[52]
