[2] The curriculum comprises the compulsory study of English together with a second language chosen amongst Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, Spanish, German and Portuguese. In addition, the curriculum envisages the possibility of extra-curricular courses in Japanese and Swedish, as well as Writing Workshop in Italian, and simultaneous interpretation in English, French, Spanish and German.[3] [4]

History[edit]

SSML Carlo Bo was founded in Milan in 1951 as a university for interpreters and translators (bearing the Italian name Scuola Superiore per Interpreti e Traduttori with acronym SSIT). Its founders are the poet, literary critic and professor of Spanish and French language and literature Carlo Bo and the teacher Silvio Federico Baridon, who intended to train qualified professional figures in the field of foreign languages with the aim of increasing Italy's contacts with the rest of the world. The original building housing the school stood in Via Silvio Pellico, near the galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.

The inauguration of a new office in Rome in 1953 was followed in succession by new offices in Florence, Bologna, Naples, Bari and Genoa. In 1955 the school consolidated its structure and assumed its current institutional structure as a foundation, assuming the status of legal entity in 1958. In 1968 Carlo Bo promoted and created the foundation of what would become today's IULM University of Milan, whose fundamental basis consists the study of foreign languages as for SSML Carlo Bo. The foundation was presided by Carlo Bo from its creation until 2001, by the former Italian Prime Minister Giulio Andreotti until 2013, and currently by Giovanni Puglisi.[5]
