Carlos Ágreda is a Colombian conductor and composer, in 2018 appointed as the music director and conductor of the Empire State Youth Orchestra in New York. Between 2016 and 2018 Ágreda was the conducting fellow at the Curtis Institute of Music where was mentored by Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
His repertoire ranges from contemporary and Latin-American music to opera and choral music. Ágreda has worked with a wide range of orchestras in Latin America, the United Kingdom and the United States, assisting and working with orchestras such as the Pittsburgh Symphony (USA), the St. Louis Symphony (USA), and the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic (UK), and conducting ensembles such as the BBC Philharmonic (UK), the Colombia National Symphony, the Manchester Camerata (UK), Curtis Symphony Orchestra, the Cabrillo Festival of Contemporary Music Orchestra (USA), fully staged opera productions at the Opera Philadelphia and the Curtis Opera Theatre (USA). At the age of 22, Ágreda caught international attention when he reached the third round in the Cadaqués Orchestra International Conducting Competition 2013, being the youngest and one of the last seven short-listed candidates.
As a composer, Ágreda won the first prize of the Stockport Youth Orchestra Composition Competition 2016 (UK) and the first prize of the Gustavo Gómez Ardila Composition Competition 2012 (Colombia) among others. His works have been performed by the leading professional orchestras in Colombia and also professional orchestras in the United States, United Kingdom and Brazil.
In addition to Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Carlos has received classes and support from maestros such as Juanjo Mena, Michael Tilson Thomas, Cristian Măcelaru, Vasily Petrenko, Benjamin Zander among others. Ágreda studied conducting at the Royal Northern College of Music, his education started in Colombia where studied conducting, piano and composition at the Juan N. Corpas University. Ágreda is currently represented by Hazard Chase, London.
