Carly Wilford is a British music producer, DJ, broadcaster and presenter. She co-founded the dance music collective and radio program SISTER and is a mental health and anti-harassment advocate.

Early life[edit]

Carly Wilford grew up in Northamptonshire, UK. At the age of 19 started to do hospital radio where she visited hospitals and took music requests from patients.[1] She also had a career as a dance teacher and personal trainer.[2]

Career[edit]

Wilford has spent much of her music career in London, UK. She started out in 2013 as a radio presenter at Rinse FM, co-hosting a show with SK Vibemaker and then went on to the Breakfast Show.[1] She also hosted a daily radio show on Los Angeles-based station Dash Radio, where she drew a connection between UK and US dance music scenes.[3]

She has been an early supporter on the radio for artists like Sam Smith, Skrillex,[2] and Rudimental who have all spoken publicly about her championing.[3] In 2017, she was a part of SkrillexOWSLA tour in Europe.[4]

Wilford’s career as a broadcaster has included covering music festivals like Glastonbury, SXSW, Ultra, Sónar, BBC Radio 1's Big Weekend and Secret Garden Party. She has also reported on awards shows as a correspondent for various brands including The Brit Awards for VEVO, British Academy Film Awards, MTV Europe Music Awards and The Fashion Awards for Snapchat and the MOBO Awards for HTC.[3]

She has also written for Hunger Magazine, Wonderland and HuffPost.[3]

Wilford has worked A&R for Skrillex’s label OWSLA.[2] Wilford has also worked as an artist manager, A&R and consultant for record labels and brands like Apple.[4] In 2017, she managed UK artist Josh Barry, who has toured as the lead male vocalist of dance duo Gorgon City.[1] In 2021, she was named the first female ambassador for The Roastery, a coffee company in the UK.[5]

DJ and Producer[edit]

With Wilford’s success in radio, she soon started getting booked for live DJ gigs.[1] She has played sets at Citadel Festival, Latitude, Glastonbury and Bestival, in addition to London venues Fabric, XOYO and Ministry of Sound.[6]

In 2020, she completed an Ableton course through Toolroom Academy and in January 2021 released her debut single Generation X with Mr V. The single has gained support from the likes of BBC Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Danny Howard, Arielle Free and Jaguar, as well as Kiss FM’s TCTS and Ben Malone. The single also received placement on Spotify’s key editorial playlists, New Music Friday UK, New Music Friday Cratediggers and UK House Music. Fellow DJs and producers Mark Knight, Idris Elba, Martin Garrix and David Guetta have also expressed support.[6][7][5]

The song reached number 4 in the Traxsource tech house chart and was included on the album Leaders of the New School, which reached number 1 on the Beatport tech house chart.[8]

Wilford has created exclusive mixes for various outlets, including BBC Sounds.[9]

Advocacy[edit]

In 2014, Wilford co-founded the collective and radio platform SISTER by performing the first show as a collective.[10][11] The collective includes artists working in bass music,[2][12] and focuses on creating balance in the music industry through discovering and backing new artists and curating events. The radio show and podcast broadcast globally and monthly via Subtle Radio,[4] and include digital station Dash and Kiss FM Australia.[2]

Wilford also advocates for mental wellness for artists and industry members, as well as the elimination of harassment in the workplace and on the dancefloor.[13] She has been invited to speak at various conferences including ADE 19,[14] International Music Summit (IMS) in Ibiza and Take Note Academy.[15]

In 2020, she launched a:live, a meditation and wellbeing platform with a monthly series of guided meditation tracks.

Wilford is also an ambassador for Nordoff Robbins, the UK’s largest music therapy charity.[4]

Honors and awards[edit]

In 2019, she was listed on SheSaidSo’s Alternative Power 100 Music List and in 2020 won the award for Music and Entertainment at the Women Leaders Awards by the Milton Keynes Business Leaders Partnership.[16][17]
