Carma Zimmerman Leigh

Carma Russell (Zimmerman) Leigh was director of three county libraries in California, including San Bernardino, the largest county library system in America at the time. She was also the state library director of California and Washington.[1]

Early Life and Career[edit]

Leigh began her career in 1930 as a junior circulation assistant at Berkeley Public Library. She was appointed director of Watsonville Public Library in California less than two years later. Leigh then went on to direct three county libraries in California, one of which being San Bernardino, which was the largest county library in the country at the time of her appointment. She was offered the position of state librarian of Washington in 1945. She worked there for six years. In 1950, Leigh was elected president of Pacific Northwest Library Association, where she helped write a report on public library service in the Northwest and what could be done to improve it. In 1951, she was appointed California state librarian, where she served until 1972. She was the first women to direct state libraries in two different states. Leigh continued working in this field, and served on the California State Library Networking Task Force in the early 1990's.

Rewards and Recognitions[edit]

In 1995, the California Library Association honored Leigh as its longest serving member. She was recognized the following year by the American Library Association for her legislative contributions. She was Oklahoma College for Women's (now University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma) "Most Popular Girl" in 1925, the year she graduated with a B.A. in history. She was inducted into USAO Alumni Hall of Fame in 1973.

Death[edit]

Carma Russell (Zimmerman) Leigh passed away at the age of 104 years old on September 25, 2009. At the time of her death, she was the oldest known living graduate of the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma.[2]
