Carmat SA
Carmat SA (Acronym for Alain Carpentier and Matra Defense) is a French biotech firm.[1] It was founded by French professor and leading heart transplant specialist Pr Alain Carpentier and by Jean-Luc Lagardère. The first implantation was performed by french surgeons at Georges Pompidou European Hospital in Paris on a 75-year-old French man.[2][3][4] It has received the CE marking for its total artificial heart on December 22, 2020.[5][6]. This allows Carmat to sell its articial heart (named Aeson) in Europe[7]
The FDA has authorized Carmat on February 10, 2021 to implant the new version of its artificial heart in the early feasability study in the USA[8][9].
The first USA implantation was performed on Monday, 12th of July 2021 by Duke University Hospital surgeons. The patient, Matthew Moore was suffering from a major heart failure. This is only temporary : the aim is to keep the Carmat artificial heart until a real one is available. At this point, the Carmat device will be explanted and replaced by a biological heart. 10 patients will be selected in the future for this Early Feasibility Study.[10][11][12][13] [14]
